Abhimanoo Sukhai

Our Legend, ABHIMANOO SUKHAI, lovingly known as “Fred, ” beloved husband of 47 years to Seerojnie “Geeta” Sukhai, devoted father, doting grandfather, brother, friend, and proud retired NYPD sergeant, passed away peacefully at his home in the Town of Newburgh, New York, on July 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 77 years old.

Born on November 25, 1948 in Uitvlugt, Guyana, Fred was the kind of man whose presence filled every room. Strong, fiercely loyal, quick with a story or joke, and never one to shy away from speaking his mind, he lived with conviction and protected those he loved with unwavering devotion. He dedicated more than 50 years of his life to protecting others as an officer of law in both Guyana and the United States. In retirement, he remained the steady foundation of his immediate and extended family. He was a “perfectly imperfect” and iconic human, whose word meant something and whose strength could always be counted on, until the very end of his full and beautiful life.

His greatest pride has always been his family: the family he was born into, the family he built, and the family he chose. Fred appreciated life's simple pleasures (especially Geeta’s home cooking and his favorite Indian music). He had a gift for making people laugh and told unforgettable stories that will be retold for generations to come.

Fred defied all odds by surviving a nearly fatal health event eight years ago. After brief stays in physical therapy rehabilitation facilities, he thrived in long-term hospice care at home, where he remained surrounded by attentive and loving care from his wife and children—especially his devoted daily caregivers and beloved grandchildren, Sam & Kyrsty Sukhai, under the vigilant  guidance of his daughter, Naomi. The Sukhai Family is tremendously grateful for the compassionate support of Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, especially Nurse Sandy, whose kindness helped make it possible for Fred to remain in the comfort of his own home.

Fred is survived by his wife, Geeta, with whom he built a family rooted in unconditional love, resilience, and unbreakable loyalty. He is also survived by his children Gavin & Anika Sukhai and grandchildren Jackson, Madison, Alexander, Grace, and Lucas. Fred is survived by his honorary daughter Debbie Brown & grandchildren Sam, Kyrsty, Justin, and Quentin. Additionally, he is survived by his daughter Tabitha Sukhai (Naomi) & her partner Apollo Arroyo (“Bubba”), and his baby-daughter Sheena Sukhai (“Billie”). He is also survived by his much-beloved and often-cuddled fur babies: Tobias, Zuko, Freddy Jr., Presley, and Poppy. Fred is survived by wonderful siblings Dan-Dan & family, Radika & family, Neville & family, and Leela & family. He is also survived by his loving in-laws Dhanraj & family, Sham & family, and Deepu & family.

Fred joyfully reunites with his parents, Lilman Sukhai & Sookranie “Maa” Balla, his parents-in-law Khemraj Pawaroo & Rukmin “Shiela” Khemraj, elder brother Harry, and brother-in-law, Paul.

Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home in Newburgh on Friday, July 10, 2026 at 3 PM - 7 PM. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 9 AM - 11 AM followed by burial at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale, NY, where Fred will be laid to rest near his beloved mother and mother-in-law.

Finally, Fred has asked that we encourage all who are willing and able to honor his memory by caring for those you love with the same steadfast devotion that he so freely gave to others, and that his own family was privileged to return to him during the final years of his life. Caregiving, especially for our elders, is among life's greatest acts of love and one of its deepest honors.
