Alexander Giammattei, 94, a lifelong resident of Newburgh, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2026, in the presence of his family.
Al was born in Newburgh, NY on November 4, 1931 to the late Alexander and Mary Ochietti Giammattei. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Rose, and cherished daughters, Dana and Lori (Mark), brother Vincent Giammattei (Carina) and sister Patricia Puglielle (late Ralph), and many nieces and nephews.
Al was predeceased by his siblings Anthony “Sonny” Giammattei (Elizabeth), Michalena “Betty” Lozier (Robert), Florence Mazzie (Ralph), Rose Hunter (Edward), Thomas Giammattei (Martha), Lorraine Barr (William) and Marie Ferraro (Frank).
Al graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and shortly thereafter served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War until his honorable discharge.
He was a member of the IBEW Local 363 as a master electrician, often called upon by family and friends for his expertise in all matters electrical.
An American Legion Certificate of Continuous Membership was awarded to Al for his association of 50 years.
Al’s athletic interests included bowling, where he received several plaques for his achievements, and playing golf. He was a member of the New Paltz Golf Course for many years.
After retirement, Al spent winters in Florida with his wife and enjoyed time with friends, playing golf, and the ocean and sunshine.
He was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Newburgh.
Al looked forward to getting together with his brothers, sisters and family members to play cards and celebrate special occasions with good food and desserts.
Al will be remembered for his sweet tooth, sense of humor, easygoing personality and devotion to his wife and family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Al’s family on Thursday, April 16, 2026 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY 12550.
A Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 1:00 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 145 Benkard Avenue, Newburgh, NY 12550.
After the mass, Al will be laid to rest with military honors at Cedar Hill Cemetery & Mausoleum, 5468 US-9W, Newburgh, NY 12550.
