Obituary

Anthony Charles Moriello

January 12, 1936 ~ March 25, 2026

Lifelong resident of the Newburgh area, Anthony Charles Moriello was called home on the afternoon of March 25th.  Born in 1936 and known as Anthony to his doctors, Chuck to his pilot buddies, and just Charlie to most everyone else, he was a dedicated husband, father, brother, son, and long-time member of the Middle Hope Vol. Fire Dept.  He served his community as the Fire District Treasurer for more than three decades. From a young age, he also served in the NY Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel.

At age 22 Charlie enlisted in the US Army. After crypto school, a TS clearance, and the rank of E-4 specialist, he was assigned to the 507th ASA in Heilbronn, Germany. He enjoyed his time abroad and hoped to perform the same job as a civilian at Ft. Meade.  Unfortunately, after an accident on the farm, his father, Camillo Moriello, succumbed to his injuries.  Ever the loyal son and brother, Charlie began to run the family farm and cold storage warehouse in 1961.  Some time later, he would work toward a private pilot's license. Then later, a commercial pilot's license. He flew turboprops for private plane owners and The Nevele Hotel.

In addition to his father, Charlie was preceded by his mother, Edith Moriello.  His wife Joan. Brothers-in-law Anthony Attalienti and Peter Phillips. And sadly, the untimely passing of his nephew Kynan Phillips; his youngest sister Camile; and his loving daughter Michelle.

He is survived by his son Matthew Moriello.  Sister Barbara Attalienti.  Sister-in-law Mary Phillips. Nieces Mia and Peggy. Nephews Greg, Mark, and Robert.  As well as grand-nieces Kristina, Victoria, Morgan, Taylor, Bailey, Amy, and April and grand-nephews Michael, Matthew, and Justin.  As well as many cousins and their spouses throughout the area.  Charlie loved family gatherings.  Memorial Day BBQs, Thanksgiving, Easter, especially at Christmas time.  He was generous to all his extended family and brought us together for many happy Christmas celebrations.

A private viewing for family and close friends will be held at Brooks Funeral Home from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Saturday the 28th of March.  A funeral Mass will follow at St. Francis Church on Benkard Ave. in the City of Newburgh at 11AM.   Interment will take place at public ceremony at Calvary Cemetery with honors, followed by a memorial service, held at a date and time TBA.  This way, we hope most of his friends and family can celebrate Charlie's life and many achievements.

The family would like to thank his home health aide, Sanika, for her kindness and friendship to Charlie in his final weeks.  And to thank the care and support shown from the nurses and staff at Hospice of Orange and Sullivan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Charlie's memory to Hospices of Orange and Sullivan or to St. Patrick's Soup Kitchen, 55 Grand St, Newburgh, NY 12550.
