Obituary

Arlene M. Butwell
June 28, 1937 ~ March 24, 2023
Arlene M. Butwell, entered into rest on March 23, 2023 after a brief illness. She went to join her belovedhusband of 65 years, Joseph J. Butwell who predeceased her this past August. Born Arlene Marie Reed to thelate Donald Francis and Sue Corrado Reed in Newburgh NY, she was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academyand a proud life-long Newburgh resident. She and Joe spent their courtship years exploring Newburgh from thebluff, to the waterfront, Broadway and beyond, and her fond memories of the 'glory days' of Newburgh neverdimmed.
Arlene is survived by her four children, David Butwell (Gina Glynn) of Newburgh, Sue Ann Brainard (Doug)of Rochester NY, Janice Butwell of Nyack NY, and Joseph C. Butwell (Andrea) of Watertown, CT. Alsosurvived by her grandchildren, Andrew Butwell (Veronica Correa), Matthew Butwell (Christina Ferrari), CarlyButwell Daring (Tim), Jack Glynn, Sagan, Casey, Ryan, Sydney and Ezra Jane Butwell, and great-grandchildren,Landon, Lilah and Julian Daring, Jonathan Correa and Noah and Kiera Butwell as well as her sisters-in-law CaroleButwell Striano and Nan Marie Butwell Heter and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by hersisters Shirley Alfano and Marilyn Quinn.
A tireless volunteer at Sacred Heart School as her kids were growing up, Arlene could always be counted on tochaperone field trips, work on bake sales, Bingo and numerous other school and parish activities. One of DuPontAvenue's favorite Mom's, Arlene never complained when snow days kept her kids home or when friends orneighborhood kids crowded into the pool or onto the front porch. She made Schroon Lake vacations fun forboth her kids and grandkids, was unmatched at Jeopardy and left all with many happy holiday memories.Arlene was an avid swimmer where she could be found each morning at the Y in New Windsor, swimming hermile and enjoying the company of the many friends she made there over the years. When arthritis prevented herfrom swimming any longer, Arlene made a whole new network of friends online with both Facebook and herNewburgh chat rooms where her fabulous memory made her the go-to source for all things 'old-Newburgh'.Famous for her meatballs and chocolate chip cookies, Arlene's sense of humor was ever-present where evendespite dementia she kept her new friends, family, and the staff at Artis Senior Living in Chestnut Ridgeamused with her quick wit. But in the end, as in life, it was her beloved Joe that mattered most to Arlene andher desire to be reunited with him won out.
Arlene's family would like to thank her many caregivers for their kindness and caring in her final year.Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, or the Arthritis Foundation.
