Obituary

Burton Milton Cosman, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2014 after a brief illness. He was "Burt" to some; to others, he was "Pop." He was 82. The son of the late E. Pauline (Wilcock) Cosman and Burton Cecil Cosman, he was born May 9, 1931 in Middlehope, NY and lived the vast majority of his life in Middlehope before becoming a Florida resident in his retirement and splitting his time between Middlehope and St. Cloud, Florida. Burton was a product of the Newburgh School District and graduated from State University of New York at Delhi before returning to the family farm in Middlehope, NY. He, his father and his brother David also owned and operated the Candlestick Mobile Home Park in Middlehope until their retirement. He was an original member of Middlehope Fire Company and formerly a member of Moulton Memorial Baptist Church. In the 1970s, he was instrumental in the re-establishment of the Chapel Hill Bible Church, where he was a member and served as an elder. Whether it was sitting at a table with a puzzle, eating a slice of pie or tending his garden, Burt enjoyed the quiet times. He spent many hours with his tools in his shed, creating projects for the entire family, especially his grandchildren. Burt leaves behind countless memories to be cherished by his family, including his wife of 57 years, Doris (Jones) Cosman of St. Cloud, FL and Middlehope, NY and their four children: Cynthia Mentz and her husband Jeffrey of Pine Bush, NY; Thomas Cosman of Middlehope, NY; Mark Cosman and his wife Lynn of Milton, NY; and Diane Reynolds and her husband James of Simsbury, CT. "Pop" also leaves behind seven grandchildren whom he adored: Melissa, Christine and Victoria Cosman; Danika Rockwell and her husband Dustin; Adam Mentz; and Kelly and Benjamin Reynolds. He also leaves two great-grandchildren: Braden and Jaelene. Burton is also survived by three brothers and a sister: David Cosman and his wife Anita of Estero, FL; Peter Cosman and his wife Rosanne of Casper, WY; Bruce Cosman and his wife Ruth of Smithville, OK; and Ruthann Deyo and her husband Robert of Berthoud, CO. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Friends may call at Brooks Funeral Home in Newburgh on Friday, February 14 from 5-8 pm. The funeral services will be at Goodwill Church on Route 208 in Montgomery on Saturday, February 15 at 10 am. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
