Charles W. Scannell, Jr.
December 22, 1926 ~ February 21, 2026
It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Charles W. Scannell Jr, on February 21, 2026, at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, NY. He was 99. Born in 1926 in Tarrytown, NY, (now Sleepy Hollow), he was the son of Charles and Catherine (Gilmartin) Scannell.
Throughout his life, Charlie had three passions - his family, his career, and athletics.
Born the only child of poor Irish immigrants, Charlie had survivor's blood in his veins. His father was a merchant seaman who survived the attack and sinking of the Lusitania during WW I. His mother, who immigrated to the US at age 15, supported herself by working as a domestic servant for some of New York"s most prominent citizens at the time. Because of this, Charlie developed both a powerful independent spirit, and a deep affinity and respect for family life. Starting at age 11, he held various odd jobs in his community. His first position was delivering marketing fliers for area businesses. At age 14, he worked as a pin-setter at a local bowling alley. Throughout high school, he was employed as a busboy and caddy at a regional country club. More than just having a natural entrepreneurial spirit, Charlie was a devoted son who worked hard from an early age, and was committed to helping his parents navigate the challenges of the Great Depression.
In July 1945, at the age of 18, Charlie was drafted into the US Army just as WWII was coming to a close. Most of his service found him stationed in Fort Dix, NJ, where he fine-tuned his administrative and accounting skills assisting fellow soldiers as they transitioned back to a post-war life.
After rising to the rank of technical sergeant, Charlie was honorably discharged. He enrolled in Pace University and was a member of the school's first graduating class in Business Administration. He would use this education throughout a 43-year career as a travelling financial auditor, an investment banker, and, eventually, an executive officer for several well-known financial institutions in the New York City area. Charlie was a gifted businessman and truly loved anything having to do with investing and finance.
On July 23,1960, Charlie married Joyce Roche in St. Columba Church in Chester, NY. They shared 63 years together, raising five children, traveling the world and snowbirding in Fort Myers Beach, FL. Joyce predeceased him in 2023. In their early years, they lived in North Tarrytown, Highland Mills and Cold Spring, NY. Later on, when they weren't snowbirding, they spent their retirement years residing in Cape May, NJ, and Northville, NY. In addition to being a supportive husband, Charlie was a dedicated father who encouraged his children to excel in all areas of their lives, especially education and sports. Perhaps that is because he was an intellectually gifted man, and an incredibly talented athlete.
As a youth, Charlie was a skilled basketball, baseball and softball player. In his late teens through mid-twenties, he shifted his focus and put his attention on softball, playing in local Westchester County, NY, leagues. Known as 'The Barber', Charlie was a fearsome pitcher who struck out many would-be opponents. He sent the ball across the plate so fast and tight, his batters often left the box feeling as if they were given a 'shave', which is how he acquired his
nickname. He even pitched three no-hitters in an era when relievers had not yet been introduced to the sport.
It is also during this time that Charlie became known as a highly adept golfer. This was a passion that followed him throughout his entire life and resulted in a low handicap of six, and a total of seven holes-in-one. His final hole-in-one occurred in 2014 - at nearly 88 years of age - at the Myerlee Golf Course in Fort Myers, FL. Even into his final years of life, when residing in an assisted living center, Charlie could be found outside chipping away at his own makeshift putting green.
Yes, Charlie lived a full and active life right to the end. It was only a short, but powerful, illness that caused him to slow down shortly before his passing.
Charlie is survived by his five children, Matthew Scannell Sr, Mary-Pat (Larry) Briggi, Brendan Scannell, Joan Scannell and Tim (Jennifer) Scannell. Nine grandchildren, Matthew Scannell Jr, Robert Scannell, Daniel (Emily) Briggi, Conor (Kennedy) Briggi, Jack Briggi, Killian (Taylor) Young, Bailey (Eamon) Daley, Samantha (Cameron) Scannell, and Sydney Scannell; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Charlie was predeceased by his grandson, James Scannell.
Services will be held on Saturday, March 14th from 2:00pm-5:00pm at Brooks Funeral Home located at 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY 12550.
