Obituary

Charlotte G. Lawrence of Katonah, NY, died on March 1, 2013, at home in Newburgh, NY surrounded by her loving family. Charlotte was the true matriarch of her family and a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She graduated from the Mount Kisco High School and continued her education at Delhi Technical Institute where she received her Associates degree in Institutional Food Management. She married her high school sweetheart, James Fayette Lawrence Sr., and settled in Katonah when Jim returned from serving in the Army Air Forces in WWII. Charlotte was widowed at the age of 36 and decided to pursue her love of poetry and the written word by seeking an education degree with a focus on English and art history. She received her bachelor's degree from Hunter College and continued studying to achieve her master's degree from Columbia University. She served as an English teacher in the Somers High School for 25 years, during many of which she was the English Department Chairwoman. Charlotte was quite a busy woman when she was not in the classroom. She could be found chaperoning student trips to England, Scotland, or Wales. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Katonah, NY and served several terms as a Ruling Elder. She loved vacationing at Cape May and Long Beach Island, NJ. Charlotte was host extraordinaire and was most often found planning for the next gathering around her table. Her gift to the family was her ability to gather us together and celebrate everything about life, big and small. Every new day was cause for a party and we will all never forget many a meal, a smile, and a tollhouse cookie that was shared together. We give thanks to God for blessing us with such a grand lady whose hospitality to all is a gift we hope to share with others in return. Charlotte is survived by her sons, James Lawrence and wife, Lisa, of DeLand, FL and Randall Lawrence and wife, Mary, of Katonah, NY. Charlotte had 6 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A service to celebrate her life is scheduled for March 9, 2013 at 2 pm at The First Presbyterian Church of Katonah, NY. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Charlotte's name to the Deacons fund at First Presbyterian Church of Katonah, 31 Bedford Rd, Katonah, NY 10536.
