Newburgh, NY
Christopher "Chris" Carney, 61, of Newburgh, New York, passed away on October 17, 2026.
Born in Newburgh in 1965 to Ann and Raymond Carney, Chris was the youngest of five children. He attended Newburgh public schools and went on to earn a certificate in commercial underwater welding from The Professional Diving School of New York.
In 1987, Chris was featured in the Times Herald-Record for his work as a commercial diver on the Marcy South power-line project beneath the Hudson River. As one of only two divers working on the riverbed, he helped lay thousands of feet of conduit across the water, a remarkable undertaking for someone so young. Chris took pride in his specialized skills, which included underwater welding, inspections, and salvage.
Speaking about this work, he expressed a sentiment that was both practical and down-to-earth: he never wanted to be too busy “to help a guy fix his pool.” It was a simple saying that offered a glimpse of Chris’s character and the kind of person he was.
He is survived by his father, Raymond; his sons, Jason and Austin; his siblings Rayanne, Kevin and Suzy; his aunt, Debbie; his niece, Lauren; nephews Derek, Justin and Riley; great-nephews Logan, Donovan, Garrett and Walter; and great-nieces Lilly, Shayla and Mabel.
Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Ann, and his brother, Ray "Rusty".
Chris's memory will be cherished by his family and the many friends whose lives he touched. He will be remembered with love and deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
