Conrad D. Hansen Aka (Top) of Wallkill, NY passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 29, 224
Conrad was born in Carmel, NY on December 2, 1943, to Rose and Walter Hansen, his birth parents, and was lovingly raised by his adoptive family, the Pecors.
Conrad enlisted in the USMC at the age of 16 and was deployed to Cuba during the Missile Crisis of 1962. He served in the 1st Guard Company USMC in Sidi Yahya Morocco where he was a dog handler, he then became the kennel master. He and the few other Marines that were deployed to Cuba were presented with the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal by Marine Corps legend, Chesty Puller in a formal ceremony at the barracks.
Conrad then deployed to the Republic of VietNam, serving with the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion at Danang. After months of doing reconnaissance patrols, he was sent to scuba school in the Philippines. He then became the NCOIC of the Marines scuba locker. Conrad left the Marines after 6 years and the Marines were out of Vietnam. Conrad was the recipient of 3 Purple Hearts and many other decorations during his time in the Republic of Vietnam
He then joined his local police department on May 21, 1976, with the Rockland County Sheriff's Office, then transferred to the Town of Newburgh Police Department on November 20, 1978. Conrad was a member of the K-9 unit and Motorcycle Unit, and created the Tactical Patrol Unit which later became S.W.A.T. He was a Firearms Instructor, EVOC Instructor and was also the Senior Drill Instructor at Rockland County Police Academy.
While serving as a Police Officer, Conrad joined the NY National Guards 19th Special Forces Group in White Plains, NY as an Intelligence Sergeant in his A team. He served with them as they transitioned to the Army Reserve in Goshen, NY. Conrad then joined the Army and once more went to the Republic of Vietnam. He was assigned to the 75th Ranger Battalion and later became a Green Beret. While he was there, he served on Jolly Green Giant Helicopters, whose mission was to rescue downed pilots. He returned home with the withdrawal of all US troops.
Conrad returned home to the police force but remained active in the Army Reserve. After 9/11 his unit was activated and sent to Iraq. Conrad was one of the few VietNam veterans to serve in the 1st Gulf War.
Conrad continued his dedication throughout, up until his retirement from both the military and as a Police Officer at the age of 62.
He is survived by his daughter, Melissa Fitzsimmons and son in- law Jason Fitzsimmons; g randchildren, Olivia Fitzsimmons and Matthew Fitzsimmons; s on, Michael Hansen and daughter-in-law, Patty Hansen; g randchildren, Landon Hansen, Ava Hansen and Nora Hansen; and sisters, Chris and Alice.
He is predeceased by his siblings: Evelyn, Helen, Pat and brother Sonny.
Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home on Thursday, October 3 from 4 - 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church on Friday, October 4 at 11AM, followed by burial with military honors at Orange County Veterans Cemetery in Goshen, NY.
