Darryl Dwight Hey

Darryl Dwight Hey entered into rest on July 26, 2026.The son of Matthew Hey and Jacqueline (Rossman) Hey he was born in Newburgh, N.Y. on January 18, 1962.

Darryl graduated from Valley Central High School. He received a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Science from Western Connecticut University. He also graduated from Canterbury University in England with a Doctorate in Classical Music. While he was attending Western Connecticut University, he received the Chairman’s Award of Distinction. This was to be the first of many awards Darryl would receive over his lifetime in music.

Darryl served as a music teacher in the Valley Central and Roscoe school districts. Darryl was a professor in the Music Department at SUNY Orange where he also created and taught a Stage Makeup program for students. Darryl used his musical talent to organize and teach music education in several correctional facilities. He was a director and producer of musicals at the Middletown Paramount Theatre. In 1984, Darryl arranged and conducted the Town Newburgh Community Orchestra. In 1990, He composed and conducted a requiem mass for East Coldenham Elementary School victims.

Darryl was a member of the Moulton Memorial Baptist Church. Darryl was the chairman of the Deacons, the director and producer of musicals at the church, and was part of the Kitchen Crew. He directed the summer Daily Vacation Bible School program (DVBS).

Darryl’s musical interest was wide-ranging. He conducted and wrote classical music, but was also a member of many local bands including the Carl Richards Band, for which he composed music.

Darryl’s second career was working with the developmental/intellectually disabled for New Horizons Resources. Starting as a direct support personnel (DSP), he moved on to hold the position of administrative counselor, and he was then promoted to the position of residential coordinator. Darryl worked with his clients using music and also accompanied them on outings into the community. Darryl was the founding member of the West Road Band.

Darryl is survived by his wife Glynnis; his mother Jacueline; his brother Tyler (Barbara); nephews: Stephen and Winston; nieces: Meredith Grant (Scott), Abigail and Delia; his beloved Boxer companion Charlotte (Charlie).

He was predeceased by his father, Matthew Hey.

Visitation will be held from 9:30am to 1:00pm Monday, August 3, 2026, at Moulton Memorial Baptist Church 54 Old Little Britain Road, Newburgh, N.Y 12550. This will be followed by a service at 1:00pm. Entombment will follow in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Newburgh.

Darryl had a lifelong love affair with music and the Lord. His music is not silent but can be heard in the wind and the ocean spray.
