Obituary

Edward Koop

August 21, 1950 ~ May 1, 2025

Edward "Ed" Koop, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and master of many trades, passed away on May 1, 2025, in a tragic accident at his home in Wallkill, NY. He was 74 years old.

Born on August 21, 1950, in Mineola, Long Island, NY, Ed was the youngest child of John and Helen Koop. From an early age, he showed an independent spirit, boundless energy, and a gift for fixing just about anything.

Ed attended Farmingdale State College before choosing to pursue a hands-on path, building a successful mechanic business in Newburgh, NY. He specialized in foreign cars and became widely known for his exceptional work on German vehicles, classic restorations, and race cars.

A true jack of all trades, Ed's passions extended well beyond the garage. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a lifelong outdoorsman, and a former lifeguard at his favorite place—Jones Beach. He loved fishing in Montauk and was president of the Remington Sportsmen's Club, where he helped foster a strong sense of camaraderie among fellow outdoor enthusiasts. He was also a life member of the Wallkill Rod and Gun Club, a place close to his heart.

Ed was a gifted baker and cook, with a deep appreciation for seafood and a home that often smelled of something delicious from the kitchen. His Black Forest cake was legendary—no one could come close to matching it. He always had a dog by his side, loyal companions who followed him from project to project, whether in the kitchen, the garage, or out in the yard.

He adored animals, thrived on keeping busy, and rarely sat still—his house in Wallkill was always alive with ongoing projects. He was endlessly generous with his time and talent, always helping friends and neighbors in need.

Known for his lighthearted spirit, constant jokes, and upbeat energy, Ed's stubbornness was legendary—he did things his way and wouldn't have it any other way. His presence brought energy and laughter into every room, and his love for life was infectious.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his three children: Jonathan (and his wife Susan), Kristen (and her husband Reuben Orter), and Matthew; and his granddaughter Everest, daughter of Jonathan, who was a bright light in his life. He is also survived by his brother, John Koop, and sister, Jeanie Brewer.

A wake will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at Brooks Funeral Home in Newburgh, NY, where friends and family will gather to remember and celebrate Ed's remarkable life.

Ed Koop will be remembered always—for his hard work, generous heart, sharp wit, and the joy he brought to everyone fortunate enough to know him.
