Edward Smith

June 14, 1934 ~ March 27, 2024

Edward Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on March 27, 2024. He was 89.

Son of the late William and Frances Smith, Ed was born on June 14, 1934, in New York, NY. Ed attended Roosevelt High School in Yonkers and went on to serve in the US Army until 1956. When he got a job as a cook in the Bronx, he met Lenore, the woman he would marry six months later; and with whom he would spend the next 62 years. Ed and Lenore moved sixty miles north of friends and family and started their own family in New Windsor. Ed retired from Ritangela Construction in 1996 and thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, especially when Lenore retired six months later.

An avid bowler, Ed also loved cars, his loyal canine companion, Chollie (the only other male in the Smith household), music and dancing, and working on his model trains; and he was always so proud of his yearly vegetable garden. But his favorite pastime was boating. He began boating in 1976 when he purchased his "Quartet". Every weekend the family would be out on the boat going here and there. It was the thing that gave him his greatest pleasure, especially sharing it with Lenore and his daughters, Barbara and Nancy. Even when the boat became too much to manage, he and Lenore remained members of the Newburgh Yacht Club, where they enjoyed many parties with their boating friends.

While Ed was considered "a man of few words" there was no question of the depth of his love for his wife and daughters, son-in-law, and later his grandchildren, Adam and Lauren. So much so, that after losing Lenore in January his reason to live was gone and he died of a broken heart.

Ed is survived by his daughter Barbara and husband Marc Stolfe; grandchildren Adam and Lauren Stolfe of Gardiner; and his brother Robert Smith and partner Darryl Gaston of Fort Lee, NJ. In addition to his parents, Ed is predeceased by his wife Lenore and daughter Nancy Smith.
