Frederick D.
Paige, Jr.
December 29, 1958 – January 26, 2013
Frederick Douglas Paige Jr.'s journey began on December 29, 1958 and culminated after an extraordinarily courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Wayne Memorial hospital in Pennsylvania. He was born in Yonkers, NY to the late Viola M. Carpenter who raised him with his father the late Irving "Lee" Carpenter. Fred spent the majority of his life in Newburgh, NY prior to relocating to Tafton, Pa. where he retired. He attended school in the Newburgh City School District and was known for his highly competitive and athletic prowess in football, wrestling and track & field. These physical skills, while notable were surpassed by his incredible intellect. He graduated an accomplished athlete and student. Fred was a natural born leader who never shunned hard work. He clearly demonstrated these attributes in his various career choices during his work life and they were reflected in his ability to secure positions of authority and accountability. At the young and spirited age of seventeen he was a District Manager for the Evening News, a position he secured in short time after being a paper delivery boy. When the paper closed he secured a position at Tarkett where he quickly was voted a shop steward. He then moved on to NYS Corrections where he retired as a Staffing Officer after 26 years of service. Fred always had an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit - his personal business, The Front Paige was a successful enterprise which he and his wife managed for 12 years. He was also an aficionado of music, technology and first-class automobiles. Fred is well known for his passionate love of Jesus and his family. He married his soul mate and the true love of his life, Jo-Ann (McCue) Paige on August 19, 1978. Their love survived during a time when people of differing backgrounds let alone skin color was not acceptable by the norms of society; however, the injustice of prejudice and racism did not overcome them. Instead, their love story prevailed for 35 years. His final words as he fought to take his last breaths are reflective of his deep love - he asked for his beloved and wanted to know that she was "okay". Fred was a devoted husband and father of three sons (Frederick Douglas Paige III, Joshua Lee Paige & Jason Ronald Paige). He passionately and determinedly committed himself to teaching and raising them to be men who exemplified the core family values and work ethic passed on to him - values he exhibited authentically and with unwavering conviction. Fred was raised in the church but rededicated his life to Christ on February 12, 1990. He committed himself to sharing his love of Jesus and the Word. He was called to serve, and ultimately organized and Pastored a church, The City of Refuge. He was known for his ability to deliver a biblically based sermon with knowledge and depth - where it unequivocally could be understood and applied to our daily modern lives. Fred leaves to continue his legacy; his wife of 35 years, Jo-Ann Paige; three sons; Frederick D. Paige III, and his wife Gisele Paige of Orlando, Fl., Joshua L. Paige and his wife Dena Paige of Bucks County, Pa., Jason R. Paige and his fiancé, Deanna Prisco of New Windsor, NY; A sister and brother; Denise L. Carpenter and Leon M. He is going home to join his mother, Viola M. Carpenter, his father Irving L. Carpenter and his sister Wanda M. Page. Visitation will be held from 4-8 pm on Tuesday, January 29, and from 10-11 am on Wednesday, January 30 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, January 30 at the funeral home, with burial following in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh.
