Obituary

Grace O. Bakker

May 22, 1931 ~ November 19, 2025

Grace Olga Bakker, known to many as Pat, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2025 with her daughter by her side. She was 94 years of age.

Pat was born on May 22, 1931 to Eloise Odell Yettru and Rev. Carl H. Yettru in Albany, New York. She lived her life in New York, with much of her childhood spent in Bridgewater, Sharon Springs, and Lewbeach in upstate New York. She later resided in Cornwall, then Newburgh. Most recently spending her final years at The Landing in Poughkeepsie.

Although named after beloved aunts Grace and Olga, she preferred the name Pat; a nickname originating from Aunt Grace learning to ski on St. Patrick's Day. Pat was encouraged by her parents' example of leading an altruistic life, and pursued a career in teaching. She earned her bachelor's degree from Defiance College. She began her elementary teaching journey in Ohio, then taught at Little Britain Elementary School in the Washingtonville Central School District. She retired after having taught for a total of 35 years.

Pat was dedicated to teaching and to raising her only daughter, yet she immensely took pleasure in spending time with friends and family. She attended the Cornwall United Methodist Church, participating in the choir. She enjoyed playing tennis, and journeyed to Spain with her dear friend Barbara Crevling. After retiring, Pat offered time to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh. She married Richard Bakker in 1983, sharing 35 years of love. Together they also traveled to New England, Canada, and one adventure throughout many National Parks in the West.

Pat is survived by her daughter, Holly (Paul), her beloved granddaughter Caraline, and Paul's children Jesse (Yvette) and Alison (Cody, their son Wesley, and Cody's son Caden). From her marriage to Richard, she leaves behind her stepson Rich (Fran) and step-grandchildren Matt (Sheila) and Jillian (Matt). Pat is held in the hearts and memories of her loving sister-in-law Vivian, and nephews Eric (Wendy), Jon, and Peter, and the adult children of her nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, her parents, her brother Carl Robert, and her sister BeaMae.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The family requests, if desired, contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity.
