Obituary

Ida F. Mauriello

March 27, 1927 ~ February 27, 2026

Newburgh, NY

Ida Mauriello was born Ida Franco in Rome, Italy March 27, 1927 to Oreste and Prudenza Franco. Her father ran a souvenir shop by the Rome train station and spoke up against Fascism. He was threatened by Mussolini's Fascist Party in 1938 and he narrowly escaped to the US.  At age 13 Ida, her mother and siblings followed him to the Bronx in 1940. Ida took extra English courses and graduated ahead of her class at Christopher Columbus High School at age 16. She went to work for Metropolitan Life in NYC.  She met a handsome first generation Italian, from Manhattan, Andrew Mauriello who was a WWII veteran, attending Cornell Law School. They married in 1951. After 2 daughters were born to them they moved from their Riverside Drive apartment to a permanent life in Newburgh, NY and increased the family by 3 more children.

Ida was a loving mother and great cook.  She also worked hard for many volunteer causes beginning in the1970s and well into the 2000s. She served at the Newburgh Daycare center, and President of the Women's Optimist Club. She chaired the St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary for a number of years and helped to raise significant funding that upon her suggestion was used to improve the gift shop and lobby in 1983. She also managed the Hospital Auxiliary thrift shop through the 90s and in 2007 a thrift shop for the YMCA. She was a longtime member of the Powelton Club, an avid tennis player, skier and hiker and an especially skilled bridge player.

Ida visited her family in Italy over the years and kept in touch with her many aunts, uncles and cousins.  She, her husband and friends traveled to many parts of Europe during their lifetime and Ida translated for all in Italy.  Ida cherished her friendships most of all. A friend of Ida's was a "best friend" of Ida's.  She was kind, generous, humble and active throughout her long life.  The family would like to especially thank Rosa Rodriguez who helped our Mom in a very loving way during the last couple years and Ida's first grandson Harry Porr IV who moved in to take care of her and share wonderful memories in the last couple months. We also thank those "best friends" who helped make Ida's last years more pleasant by taking her to church, Fina, and bridge Lois, Dottie, Caren, and, lunch and dinners out, Joyce, Elaine. Also, her caring neighbors, Gino and Ella, Matt, Richard and Joyce, and those who came to visit from far off places, Mary and Carol, also those who called and wrote often. Many thanks also to the caring nurses and employees of Ambulance services, St. Luke's Hospital, Orange and Sullivan Hospice, The Kaplan Hospice Center, and Brooks Funeral Home.

Ida was loved fondly and will never be forgotten by her four daughters, Carol Case (Dan), Joan Porr (Harry), Cathy Miller and Terry Lewis (Steve), and son Chris Mauriello (Anastasia).  As well as her 8 grandchildren, Harold Porr IV, Johanna Porr, Andrew Porr (Kate),  Ken Case (Brieanne), Julia Winer (Jon), Steven Case, Madison Lewis, and Alexandra Mauriello. Ida was also kind to and loved as well by her great-grandchildren, Ida, Harold V, Anthony, Jack and Eden Porr, Aleah Barrows, David Giraudy, Patrick and Alexandra Winer, Elia and Auley Case, Calvert Yaun and Aubrey Porr and several great-great grandchildren.  Ida is remembered fondly by nephews, Robert Sammartano, Paul Provenza, Michael Greco and by niece Stefanie Oliva. She was predeceased by her husband Andrew and sisters Maria, Beatrice, Adelaide and niece Diana Provenza.
