Johannes Lutz
"Joe"
May 12, 1965 ~ March 26, 2026
Johannes "Joe" Lutz, 60, passed away unexpectedly on March 26, 2026, following a major health event in 2024 through which he relearned courage, love, and resilience in profound ways.
Born on May 12, 1965, in Glens Falls, New York, to Erwin and Erika Lutz, Joe was of German and Austrian heritage and raised in Argyle, New York, a place that always remained part of who he was. He attended Niagara University and went on to live a full and dynamic life marked by curiosity, humor, and deep connection.
In his early years, Joe was a DJ and a dedicated student of karate, earning his black belt and becoming an instructor. During the 1990s and early 2000s, he worked as a web designer on Park Avenue, blending creativity with emerging technology. He also proudly served 28 years with the New York State Department of Corrections, retiring as a Sergeant.
Joe had a deep love for animals and shared his life with his cats Lewis, Talia, and Apollo, his pug Willoughby, and rooster Woody. He enjoyed music, building computers, video games, and scuba diving.
In one of the most uniquely "Joe" expressions of love, he married his wife Rachel underwater in the Florida Keys. Together they built a life full of laughter, resilience, and devotion, welcoming their daughter, Erika. He and his wife affectionately called each other "baby," and he lovingly called his daughter his "baby girl." His love continues in the family they created—and in the future they dreamed of together, still unfolding.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Rachel Lutz (née Stahl) of Augusta, Georgia; his daughter, Erika; and his brother, Robert Lutz and sister-in-law, Crystal Lutz of Newburgh, New York.
He was predeceased by his parents, Erwin and Erika Lutz of Argyle, New York, and his brother, Richard Lutz of Argyle, New York.
Joe will be laid to rest in Augusta, Georgia, where he and Rachel had planned to retire together.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Rushton, Trish, Peter, and Katie, as well as the many therapists and care professionals who supported Joe along his journey.
Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave, Newburgh, NY, with family receiving visitors beginning at 1:00 PM and all others welcome from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
A viewing will be held in Augusta, Georgia, on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 1:00 PM, followed by a graveside service at 2:00 PM.
Joe will be remembered for his humor, his strength, and his deep love for his family.
