John Cobbs
March 3, 1928 ~ December 28, 2023
John Wilbur Cobbs, known to family and friends as Johnny, entered eternal rest on Weds, Dec. 27,3023, at St Luke's Hospital.
Johnny was born to Portia Cunningham and Wilbur Cobbs on March 3, 1928, in Hudson, NY. His early years were spent on the family farm in Danville, VA. He often shared fond memories of his days on the farm with family and friends. As a young adult Johnny migrated back up north settling in Newburgh, NY. It was there that he married the love of his life, Francis. Together they raised three boys, Ronald, Charles, and Toppy.
Despite only having a 6 grade education Johnny afforded his family a very comfortable life, taking up residence in a home that he proudly owned. He supported his family doing labor work, which allowed him to later enter into entrepreneurship, owning and operating Cobbs Taxi Services. This taught his sons not only the value of a dollar but also the importance of hustling, saving, and becoming your own boss. Along with being a hard and dedicated worker, Johnny loved to sing. He was an esteemed member of two gospel quartets, The Southern Echoes and The Sensational Wonders. The groups traveled from state to state singing praises to the Lord. This gave Johnny much joy and fulfillment.
After retirement Johnny enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, like gathering with family and relaxing at home watching old westerns. He also found great joy in reading and studying the Bible. Even up until the later weeks of his life, his children would often find him sitting in his chair reading his bible into the late hours of the night.
Johnny is fondly remembered as someone that not only loved to laugh but loved making others laugh with his quick wit and funny sayings even more. He was a kind, giving man that was stern but gentle and put great emphasis on family.
Johnny will be greatly missed by many, especially his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Johnny was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 40 years, Frances, both parents, 3 brothers, 5 sisters, and his grandson, Ronald Jr.
Left to mourn his passing are his 3 devoted children, Ronald Cobbs (Lou) of Baltimore, MD, Charles Cobbs of Newburgh, NY, and Wilbert "Toppy" Cobbs (Shona) of Newburgh, NY. One sister, Margie Johnson of Hudson, NY. Three grandchildren, Rachel, Romona, and Sherice. Eight great grandchildren. A number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The family of Johnny Cobbs would like to thank all family and fries for their outpouring of prayers, love, and support. We are forever grateful for your kindness, donations, and well wishes. We would also like to thank Brooks Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home on Saturday, January 6 from 11AM - 12PM. A funeral home service will take place at 12PM.
