John E. Schultz Sr.

July 9, 1928 ~ June 9, 2025

John Edward Schultz Sr. age 96, of New Windsor, NY passed away peacefully on June 9th, 2025 surrounded by loved ones.

John was born on July 9th, 1928, in Newburgh, NY to Viola Forster. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the U.S Navy where he was stationed aboard the U.S.S Shelton DD790 destroyer.  He proudly served in three military branches, the Navy, Army and Air Force. He retired as a Master Sergeant from the Air Force in 1988. John was employed by Central Hudson Gas & Electric and retired after 37 and a half years as a gas supervisor in 1988. In 1950 while he was employed by Central Hudson he decided to take a leave of absence and join the Air force.

In 1952 John married the love of his life Grace Morgese and shortly after they started their family while they were stationed in Bermuda, where their first son John was born. He was stationed there as a crew member on a B29 Air rescue squadron where he helped spot and rescue two Bermuda fishermen lost at sea. After almost two and a half years in Bermuda, they returned to the states where he resumed his career at Central Hudson. In 1954 they welcomed their second son Michael and in 1959 they completed their family with the arrival of their daughter Melissa.

John was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting with his sons, fishing and golfing. He was a lifetime member of Black Rock Fish and Game Club. He was also a 21st century club member with Central Hudson.  In 2015 John boarded the Honor Flight mission 8, where he had such honor and pride for being a part of such an impactful experience with so many great veterans. John was a devout Catholic and was a parishioner of St. Joseph's in Newburgh, NY. At the age of 90 he requested that he go skydiving for his birthday. He stated that the jump was for all those who lost their lives in the Air Force. His family stood and cheered him on during the jump.

John was known for his wonderful sense of humor, being an honest hardworking man who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. John was a true gentleman who was humble and kind to everyone he met. John is survived by his son John Schultz Jr. and wife Nancy, his daughter Melissa Mangelli and husband Louis and daughter in law Sherrie Schultz. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Nicole Schultz, Jennifer Angot and husband Andre, Christopher Schultz-Finely and husband Maxwell, Lauren Burks and husband Julian, Megan Scott and husband Ian. John was blessed to have 3 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Chloe Angot and Nevaeh Caldwell Schultz.

John was predeceased by his step brother Patrick Warden, his son Michael, his wife Grace and grandson Keith Schultz. He also leaves behind his favorite pup, Dash Mangelli. At this time the family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to their fathers dedicated home health team at Castle Point and the healthcare team at Franklin Delano Roosevelt VA at Montrose for their compassion and support during these past four years. Dad, you will be greatly missed by us all and remain forever in our hearts.

A visitation will be held on Monday June 16th from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Brooks Funeral Home located at 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY 12550.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi at 10:00am on Tuesday June 17th located at 145 Benkard Ave, Newburgh, NY 12550.

A burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery located at 5468 Rte 9W, Newburgh, NY 12550
