Johnathan "John" Edward Murphy, 40, of Hankins, NY, passed away on February 18, 2023, in Brooklyn, NY. Johnathan was born in Somers Point, NJ on September 10, 1982. He graduated from Valley Central High School Class of 2000. He went on to earn a Liberal Arts degree from Sullivan County Community College. He enjoyed running, music, teaching his children how to garden, and everything Marvel. Johnathan received the 2016 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence and was the Class Speaker for SUNY Sullivan's Class of 2016. He was the president of the National Society of Leadership and Success and founder of the Running Club at SUNY Sullivan.
Johnathan is survived by his daughter, Rose-Lynn Murphy of Hankins, NY; son, Jadon Cooper of Phenix, AL; and their mother, Sarah Cooper of Hankins, NY and his granddaughter Mazikeen Cooper of Phenix, Alabama; sister, Elicia Murphy of Newport News, VA; brother, Ishmael Anderson of Fort Myers, FL; brother, Brandon Murphy of Rose Hill, NC; brother, Christopher Murphy of Rose Hill, NC; step-brother, Peter Anderson of NY; step-sister, Beverly Anderson-Abdo of Poughkeepsie, NY; cousin, Sequoyah Robinson of Fort Myers, FL; cousin, Brian Burns of Hawaii; cousin, Dion Robinson of NJ; father, Johnnie Murphy of Rose Hill, NC; step-mother, Melissa Murphy of Rose Hill, NC; step-father, Berrisford Anderson of FL; niece, Alisya Abdo of Poughkeepsie, NY; nephew, Matthew Villalobos of Jeffersonville, NY; nephew, Angelo Monroe of NC; nephew, Antonio Monroe of NC; niece, Jasmine Monroe of NC; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and other extended family members. Johnathan is preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Anderson; sister, Roseanne Murphy; and sister, Myra Carlton.
Johnathan's daughter, Rose-Lynn Murphy, stated "Johnathan Murphy was a beautiful, hardworking, caring man who fought every day, his whole life to wake up and do the best he could for his family. Johnathan Murphy was the epitome of love as an action, not an emotion." He will be missed greatly.
Johnathan's family will host a memorial service on Saturday, December 9, 2023, from 12:00-2:00 pm. The service will be held at Brooks Funeral Home at 481 Gidney Avenue Newburgh, NY 12550. A burial service will take place on December 16, 2023, at Mt. Zion AME Zion Church located at 11015 Taylors Bridge Hwy, Magnolia, NC 28453.
Anyone who wishes to honor Johnathan Murphy may make a contribution to his daughter, Rose-Lynn Murphy's college fund via her mother, Sarah Cooper.
