Joseph "Pa" Detz of Newburgh, NY passed away at home on January 5. He was 101 years old.
Joseph was born in Thompsonville, CT on August 6, 1923 to Mary (Hajec) and Julius Detz. He had one brother, Frank, and four sisters: Helen, Jay, Anna, and Stella. He attended Newburgh schools and joined the Army in January of 1943. Joseph served his country in WWII in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Distinguished Service Medal, among other decorations and citations. He married Louise Alisandrelli on September 7, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Joseph was employed in several positions including Grand Union, DuPont, Stauffer, West Point, and Park Ranger at the Town of Newburgh Rec Center at Chadwick Lake. He loved casinos and playing his daily numbers and scratch-offs, and he was a die-hard Red Sox fan. He was also a member of the VFW Post 973. He loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up, and his companionship with his buddy, Sporty.
Joseph is predeceased by his wife, Louise; son, Joe "Coach" Detz; brother, Frank Detz; and sisters: Helen Koning, Jay Della Marco, Anna Templeton, and Stella Irwin. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Detz; daughter-in-law, Cindy Detz of Wallkill; grandchildren, Joe (Jill) Detz of Wallkill, Suzanne (Derek) DeGroat of Wallkill, and Lori Lynn (John) Hunt of Wallkill; great-grandchildren: Kylie, Jordyn, Joe "JJ", and Paityn Detz; Bryce, Kyle, and Hailey DeGroat; and Emma and Cole Hunt.

A special thank you to all of the family and close friends for their support in his last months, especially: sister-in-law, Cindy, Linda Willis, and Paula Soule; and to Hospice and Meals on Wheels.
Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 8 from 4 - 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Church on Thursday, January 9 at 10 AM followed by burial with military honors at Calvary Cemetery.
