Obituary

Joseph F. O'Halloran

August 6, 1935 ~ January 13, 2025

Jesus Francis O'Halloran was born in the Bronx, New York on August 6, 1935.

The first born child of Jesus O'Halloran and Julia (Marrero Perez) O'Halloran, he was the eldest brother of his siblings Juan, James, and Julia. At very tender ages, the brothers and their sister found themselves orphaned and became the wards of the Roman Catholic Sisters of Charity at the Foundling Hospital in New York. Not fond of the young child being christened with the name of the Lord and Savior, the Sisters legally changed Jesus to Joseph as he was henceforth known.

The brothers and their sister went through the foster care system in New York and lived in many homes under the authority of multiple sets of foster parents — some nice, others notably abusive. The children were, unfortunately, split up into different homes sometimes, where they met and bonded with other orphaned siblings. Michael "Mickey" Hunt and Donnie were two of their brothers from other mothers, while Julia met Barbara "Chickie" Mayes. The band of brothers and sisters would become and remain a bonded family for life.

After graduating high school, Joseph entered the Navy and attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He attended the Academy for three years and received his Bachelor's from NYIT in electrical engineering with a penchant for circuitry design, landing him lucrative positions in the bustling communications industry in the private sector.

At a sponsored Naval Dance, Joseph met his future wife, Sylvia E. Byrd. He rose up through the ranks of prominent corporate telecommunications companies, while his expertise allowed him to travel the world assisting large companies and governments cement their positions in the global markets through telecommunications.

A devout and faithful Catholic, Joseph remained close to the Church where he assisted at his local parishes as sacristan, lector, extraordinary minister of the Holy Eucharist and usher, respectively. He finally settled in Orange County, NY surviving his wife's death in 2014, and remained close to his children until his death on January 13, 2025.

Joseph is survived by his four children and a legacy of grandchildren and great grandchildren, his brother James, his foster sister Chickie and hundreds of friends who always remark on what a kind man he was.

A faithful and selfless servant of God, Joseph F. O'Halloran will be remembered as genuinely joyful and thoughtful here on earth as he rejoins his family in the Heavenly Kingdom.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace. Amen.
