Joseph A. Scalzo

October 4, 1930 ~ August 9, 2025

New Windsor, NY

Joseph A. "Joe" Scalzo, 94, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, in Newburgh, New York.

Born on October 4, 1930, in Newburgh to Joseph and Madeline Paonessa Scalzo, Joe was a lifelong resident of the Hudson Valley. He graduated from Newburgh Free Academy and earned a degree from SUNY Cortland, followed by a master's degree from New York University.

Joe served honorably in the U.S. Army while stationed in Germany. Upon returning home, he became the Creative Director for fun and activities at the Roman Gardens resort in Newburgh, where his energy and imagination brought joy to many.

A devoted Catholic and longtime parishioner of St. Patrick's Church of Newburgh, Joe lived his faith through acts of kindness and service. As an educator, he championed the philosophy of "education through the physical," inspiring students with his motto: "IF YOU HAD FUN, YOU WON."  His inclusive approach left a lasting impression on generations of learners.

Joe chaired a beautification committee at Temple Hill School, leading the planting of 60 trees—an effort that earned him praise from students who proudly said, "Mr. Scalzo, OUR trees look beautiful."

He was a lifetime member of the Powelton Club, where he began working in the locker room and waiting tables before becoming a tennis coach. In retirement, he founded The Over The Hill Gang Tennis group, continuing to share his love for the sport and community.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Frank and Thomas; and sisters Mary Mitchell, Rose Parker, and Helen Brown.

Joe is remembered by nephew Victor Mitchell; nieces Madeleine Smith (Greg), Rosemary Lewis, and Valerie McCleary (William); as well as many friends, former students, fellow athletes, and all those who knew him.

In Joe's words: "To all—I'm not sorry it's over. I'm grateful we happened."
