Josephine Gardner (née Hitchcock), lovingly known as Josie, passed away peacefully at home, on April 11, 2026, in Newburgh, New York, at the age of 77. Born on March 15, 1949, in Danbury, Connecticut, she was the cherished daughter of Mildred and Paul Schoonmaker.
Josie was a woman of boundless love and nurturing spirit. Her life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family and her ability to bring warmth and care into every moment. She spent many years selflessly caring for her beloved husband, Frederick Gardner, and her brother-in-law, Jeffrey Gardner. Her presence was a source of comfort and strength to those around her, and she had an extraordinary gift for making even the smallest moments feel significant.
Josie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a passion for crocheting, creating beautiful pieces that will forever be treasured by her loved ones. Her constant companion was her beloved kitty, Cheeto, who brought her endless happiness.
She is survived by a loving family who will deeply miss her presence. This includes her sister-in-law Vata Shook and her husband Donald Shook; nephew William Jamieson and his partner Dawn Ryan; niece Dawn Camacho and her husband Alex; nephew-in-law Dennis Pennenga; great-niece Jamie Reese-Nunziata and her husband Michael Nunziata; great-niece Amanda Pennenga and her partner Justin Vidi; and great-great-niece Madilynn Reese.
Cousin Arlene Prog; nieces Roni Goveia and Oni Stan Comb; nephew Michael Schoonmaker; as well as many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Josie was predeceased by her parents Mildred and Paul Schoonmaker; mother-in-law Vata Gardner; father-in-law Frederick Gardner; sister Anna Valie; brothers Roy Schoonmaker, Robert Schoonmaker, Paul Schoonmaker; brother-in-law John Valie; brother-in-law Jeffrey Gardner; and her dear husband Frederick Gardner.
Her family will forever hold close the memories of Josie's kindness, devotion, and the love she poured into their lives. May they find comfort in knowing that she is reunited with those she held dear who have gone before her.
Josie's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Viewing and call hours will be Wednesday April 15th, 2026, between the hours of 4PM and 7PM at Brooks Funeral Home at 481 Gidney Ave, Newburgh NY. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.
A service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday April 16th at 11am, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor NY, directly after.
