Kathryn
Wygant
June 23, 2016

Kay was born June 28th 1930 to Esther Bennett and Karl Kurtz of Shandaken NY. She was the second of five children who included Clarence, Kenneth, Robert, and Fred. Given the early passing of her father, and being the only daughter, Kay was involved in the raising and nurturing of her brothers. This resulted in strong lifelong bonds between the Kurtz siblings and even as adults the siblings would return almost weekly to the family homestead in Shandaken NY for a weekend dinner. All neighbors and friends were also welcome at the dinner table. She was predeceased by all siblings but Fred (Annemarie) Kurtz of Hurley NY. She attended schools in Shandaken NY and Fleischmann NY and attended college at Delhi NY where she studied Nutrition and Diet. At Delhi, Kay met and later married Frederick Covert Wygant on April 2, 1948. Together they had three sons, all surviving: Fred (Patricia Stokem) of Tucson AZ, Glenn (Barbara Hardy) of Clarence NY and Karl (Terry Fisher) of Pearland, TX. Kay is also survived by grandchildren Lindsay (Benjamin Daigneau), Melissa (Kwame Johnson), Melissa (Oliver Pycroft), Ali Wygant, Adam Wygant, and Teja Wygant. Also surviving are great-granddaughters Tessa, June and Isadora. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Kay previously worked for St. Luke's Hospital and New York Telephone. She was fond of children, enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and collecting antique glass. She was a long time member of St. George's Episcopal Church in Newburgh NY, where she attended services and volunteered. Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home on Friday, July 8th from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm. A service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 9 at Brooks Funeral Home, with entombment following in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Newburgh. In lieu of flowers the family recommends donations payable to the Town of Shandaken for a memorial bench in Glenbrook Park (C/O Parks Dept., PO Box 134, Shandaken NY 12480, attention Marty).
