Kenneth M.
Skonberg
July 12, 1931 – August 24, 2012
Kenneth M. Skonberg, 81, of the Town of Newburgh passed away peacefully on August 24th at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born July 12, 1931 in Brooklyn and raised in Manhattan. He was the son of the late Albert & Dorothy (Dolan) Skonberg. After graduating from Metropolitan High School in Manhattan he became a merchant seaman as an electrician and served for five years. He then served in the army stationed at West Point during which time he met and married the love of his life Lorraine M. McDermott on October 23, 1955. He later settled in New Windsor and worked for GAF and later for IBM until his retirement in 1992. During his retirement, he enjoyed his time camping, traveling, watching sports, and spending time with family. A family statement read "He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and devoted husband. He was friends with all those he met. When the grandchildren arrived he had a renewed sense of purpose as the loving "Poppy" that he was called by the family. He and the family have truly been blessed by this rich family life. He was a man of integrity, honesty and hard work. His work ethic and drive were exemplified during this time while he designed and constructed the family home, nights and weekends in New Windsor, over a 3 ½ year period while still maintaining a six day work week. This monumental task was accomplished almost entirely by himself as he learned the various trades necessary for its successful completion. This allowed his wife and children to live a better life due to his sacrifices and hard work. He will be missed and always be in our hearts, may he rest in peace." Ken was very active over the years in the community. His activities included managing both his sons during their time in the New Windsor Little League. He was a member of the New Windsor American Legion, and a member and past Trustee of the Trinity United Methodist Parish. Ken is survived by his wife, Lorraine at home; son Drew and his wife Margaret of Newburgh; daughter Lorie Coombs and her husband John of Newburgh; son Michael and his fiancé Barbara Rossi of Clintondale; grandchildren: Corey Skonberg; Michelle, J. Ryan, K. Justin Coombs; Tara and fiancé Dev Massimi and Shawn and Kahla Skonberg; great grandchildren: Schuyler and Maizie Skonberg. God Daughter Kari-Leigh McDermott and fiancé Jonathan Vega. Brothers Albert and Nadine Skonberg of Monterey, CA; Eric and Carole Skonberg of Tampa, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 27, 2012 from 4 - 8pm at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY. Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at 10:00am at Trinity United Methodist Parish, 1 Owens Road, Newburgh, NY.
