Leonard Abate Jr.
April 14, 1944 ~ October 15, 2025
Leonard "Lenny" Abate Jr., of Newburgh, NY, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on April 14, 1944, in Manhattan to Leonard and Marie (Mantione) Abate, Lenny was the youngest of three boys and spent his early years in the Bronx. His childhood was full of life and laughter—playing stickball in the street with his brothers and beloved cousins, many of whom lived just around the corner.
After graduating from James Monroe High School, Lenny followed in the footsteps of his older brothers and enrolled at Columbia University's College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He earned his degree in 1967 and moved to Fishkill, NY, where he began his career teaching chemistry at Carmel High School while working part-time at Whalen's Drug Store.
In 1970, Lenny became co-owner of Plaza Pharmacy in Beacon, NY—a classic mom-and-pop shop where he quickly became known for his quick wit, kind heart, and deep care for his customers. His colorful jokes and personal touch made Plaza Pharmacy a beloved community fixture.
It was in Beacon that Lenny met Ellen (Chaya), and the two were married on August 17, 1974. They soon settled in Marlboro, NY, where they welcomed their children, Amy and Matthew. Lenny was a devoted father, and his kids loved spending time at the drug store with him—building forts in the stockroom, browsing the toy aisle, or chatting at the front register with the high school employees who adored their boss.
Outside of work, Lenny cherished golf outings, family trips to Montauk, and hosting unforgettable gatherings at home. He took meticulous care of his backyard pool—so much so that many of his shirts bore the telltale marks of chlorine tablets. His legendary cannonballs could clear the pool, much to the delight of kids and adults alike. Fourth of July was a favorite holiday, and his backyard barbecues became the stuff of legend, with Lenny always manning the grill and making sure everyone felt welcome.
In his later years, Lenny found his greatest joy in spending time with his five grandchildren—Gwen, George, Olivia, Vivian, and Charlotte—teaching each of them to swim and delighting in every moment of their company.
Lenny is predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Marie Abate, and his brother Samuel. He is survived by his wife, Ellen; his children, Amy Abate (Matthew Nielsen) of Brooklyn, NY, and Matthew Abate (Jillian) of Newburgh, NY; his brother Joseph Abate (Eileen) of Rhinebeck, NY; his cherished grandchildren, Gwen and George Nielsen and Olivia, Vivian, and Charlotte Abate; nieces, nephews, and many cousins, whom he loved and adored.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, and aides at St. Luke's Hospital and Wingate at Beacon for their care and compassion in recent years—especially Dr. Nicholas Bambino, whose kindness, support, and friendship meant so much to Lenny and the family over many years.
A visitation will be held be held at Brooks Funeral Home on Saturday, October 25, at 11 a.m., with a celebration of Lenny's life beginning at 1 p.m. Friends are encouraged to come and share stories—of which we know there are many.
In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Lenny's memory in your own way: make a donation to a charity of your choice, do something kind for someone else, eat a cannoli, or tell a great joke.
