Marilyn Hearns

Marilyn Cariffe Hearns, a beloved family matriarch, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2026, after living a long, beautiful, and productive life. She was 99 years old.

Born on May 25, 1927, in Newburgh, New York, Marilyn was the daughter of the late Rose (Potente) Cariffe and Anthony Cariffe. On April 4, 1948, she married the love of her life, Donald R. Hearns. Together, they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage before his passing on January 13, 2005.

Marilyn was defined by an extraordinary work ethic spanning over 62 years of administrative service. She spent 32 years with the federal government at West Point and Stewart Airport, followed by decades of dedicated New York State public service as Director of Staff for her beloved boss, Senator William J. Larkin, until her retirement in 2009.

A devoted, lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh, Marilyn served her faith community with deep dedication. Over the years, she actively contributed as a lector, served on the Parish Council as both Secretary and President, and helped lead the church’s milestone anniversary campaigns.

Beyond her professional and spiritual achievements, Marilyn had a vibrant, joyful personality. She was an incredible dresser who loved shopping, and she brought people together through her passion for traditional Italian cooking and baking.

Above all, family and friends were the center of Marilyn’s heart. She completely adored her brothers, Jerry and Bobby, and her cousin Pat, who all grew up together in the same house. Raised in a close-knit Italian home full of warmth, laughter, and incredible food, their unbreakable bond and shared traditions lasted a lifetime.

Her warmth and generosity knew no boundaries. Though she had no biological children of her own, "Aunt Marilyn" poured boundless love into all of her nieces, nephews, and cousins’ children, treating each of them as her very own and stepping seamlessly into the role of a second mother. She cherished every moment spent hanging out with her cousin Pat, her sister-in-law Bette, her dear friend Sandy, her lifelong friends, and her extended neighborhood family.

Marilyn was predeceased by her beloved husband, Donald; her parents, Rose and Anthony Cariffe; and her cherished brothers, Jerry J. Cariffe and Robert "Bobby" Cariffe.

She leaves behind a legacy of devotion, service, and love. Marilyn will always be remembered for her steadfast faith, her generous heart, and her radiant, beautiful smile.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday August 21st, 2026, at Sacred Heart Church, 301 Ann St, Newburgh at 1PM. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
