Obituary

Maureen Anita Patricia Steup (nee Stange) entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 in Elant at Meadow Hill Nursing Home in Newburgh, N.Y. She was 84 years old. Born in Newburgh, she was the only child of the late Herman Stange and the late Mary Herbert Stange. She displayed musical talent at an early age and was proficient at keyboard instruments by her early teens. It was while working as a sales clerk at a local music store that she met her future husband, Frederick C. Steup, II. They wed at the tender ages of 16 and 19, ultimately celebrating 64 years of marriage. He predeceased her in July of 2012. As an adult, she played piano professionally at local establishments including Beau Rivage on the Hudson River. She also volunteered her talents as organist at St. Patrick's Church and at Our Lady of the Lake in Newburgh and Orange Lake respectively, for many years. She was a lifetime congregant at St. Patrick's Parish. After raising her three sons, she worked at a local credit bureau and then as secretary to the Director of Nursing at Sylcox Nursing Home, now known as Elant at Meadow Hill, from which she retired in 1989. She loved all of God's creatures and all the colors of the rainbow were her favorites. She found beauty in all of nature, from sunsets to moonrises and from horse chestnuts to seashells. She loved the art of make-believe, whether in local amateur theatre or in the ginger ale "cocktails" she served to her great-granddaughter. In quiet moments she read poetry and listened to music. In joyful times she was happiest as the life of the party when she sat at the piano and played rollicking sing-alongs and soulful, soaring Christmas carols. She is survived by her sons: Frederick C. Steup, III and his wife, Debra, of Cairo, NY; Michael E.Steup and his wife, Leslie, of Rock Tavern, NY; and John H. Steup and his wife, Anne, of Portland, Oregon. She is also survived by her five grandsons: Otto von Gray, Devon Steup, Frederick C. Steup, IV, Thomas Gervat and Jonrhien Steup. In addition, she is survived by two step-grandchildren: Devin S. Gittler and his wife, Renata, of Rock Hill and Tiffany S. Steinhilber of Goldsboro, NC. Survivors also include a step-great-granddaughter, Brandi L. Steinhilber of Goldsboro, NC, and dear friends, Arlene and John Staples of Vermont. Visitation will be Sunday, November 10, from 2 to 6 pm at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, November 11 at 10 am at Our Lady of the Lake Chapel, Route 52, Newburgh. Fr. Fernando Hernandez will be the celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Patrick's Soup Kitchen, 55 Grand Street, Newburgh, NY 12550 or to The Animal Rights Alliance (T.A.R.A.), P.O. Box 185, Warwick, NY 10990
