Michael P. Thomas, Sr

June 19, 1944 ~ June 11, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael P. Thomas Sr. on June 11, 2024. Mike died peacefully at home with his loving wife Eileen at his side. He was born on June 19,1944 to the late Annamae and Harold Thomas in Grosse Pointe, Michigan.

He enlisted in the Marine Corp after graduating high school and proudly served our country in the Vietnam War. He became a police officer with the City of Newburgh Police Dept and retired a highly decorated Captain including a combat cross after a long career. He started the K-9 unit in the early 80's and was proud of every handler and dog he trained including his partner K9 Lewie. He was a certified firearms instructor and President of the Superior Officers Union. An avid golfer he was a member of Osiris Country Club for 35 years and a lifelong loyal Detroit Lions fan.

In addition to his wife of 47 years Eileen he is survived by his son M. Paul Thomas Jr. and his daughter Lisa Kooperman. Devoted Papa to Ben Kooperman, Ellie Kooperman and Addison Thomas and Uncle Buddy to his niece Melissa LaGrotta and nephew Freddie LaGrotta. Brother in law Fred LaGrotta (aka Fred Zepplin) and Gina Antonucci. Two brothers Donald Thomas (Pat) and Roger Thomas (Liz) and brother in law Doug Powling. Also Lisa LaGrotta, Jason Kooperman and Kristin Thomas. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sisters Nancy Powling and Elaine Tucci. Also his in laws Joe and Elly LaGrotta and brother in law Joseph LaGrotta.

A special thank you the Dr. Shikari who was by Mikes side for over 30 years and Dr. Islam and Dr. Profeta for their years of care. Thank you to the Town of Newburgh Police and EMS who responded with such compassion.

I thought I would spend the rest of my life with you but you chose to spend yours with me.

Visitation will be held at Brooks Funeral Home on Monday, June 17 from 4 - 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church on Tuesday, June 18 at 12:30 PM followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
