Nellie Rodriguez
May 2, 1928 ~ June 22, 2026
Nellie Rodriguez, age 98, passed away peacefully on June 22nd, 2026, in the Bronx, New York. She was born in Manhattan, New York on May 2nd, 1928, to Ulpiano and Justina Rodriguez. Together, as a family, they welcomed her two younger brothers, Hector and Humberto (both deceased), and started her lifelong mission to look after her younger brothers and their eight children.
The family later moved to Ponce, Puerto Rico, where her mother, Justina, originated. Nellie coined the phrase you can take the girl out of New York but you cannot take New York out of the girl. She soon returned to her “city” and went on to finish high school at Roosevelt HS in the Bronx. She earned her diploma with honors on a business track and Spanish studies, and went on to be a successful administrative assistant at several major firms, finally retiring her typewriter at the age of 70.
Nellie was a devout Catholic, leading several clubs including the Spanish American Society and the Gardening Club. Honoring her Puerto Rican roots, she was a strong supporter of El Museo Del Barrio in NYC and the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, serving as a community leader on their committees. Nellie was an avid traveler, fearlessly traveling all over the world, at a time when women were known to remain home with the children. A true trailblazer who was ready to defend women’s rights to do anything that provided happiness and freedom.
Nellie, dedicated her long life to loving her family especially focused on educating the younger generation on history and heritage. Claiming that it was a shame tourists knew our city better than we do, she planned amazing NYC trips for all of us. She was known to the family, as big Nellie, mostly because her presence was much larger than life.
Nellie is survived by many nieces, nephews, godchildren and cousins who are amazing humans for having had her in their lives. She believed in leaving the world a better place than how you found it. Indeed, the world is a better place because of this fashionista whose special brand of magic and classic style remains in the hearts of all who knew her. Nellie will forever be remembered for her sincere friendship and a gentle soul, now gracing her loved ones in heaven.
