Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Orrin Stone Thompson, Jr., 78, formerly of Red Hook, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013, at New York State Veteran's Home in Montrose, New York. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on June 29, 1934, Orrin was the only son of Harriet Adelaide Putnam and Orrin Stone Thompson, Sr. He attended Red Hook, New York schools and received a B.S. in Engineering from Alfred University in 1956. Orrin began a long and illustrious career in the United States Army, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving numerous tours in the U.S., Germany, Korea and Vietnam. After his retirement on July 4, 1998 from active military service, he entered a second 26 year career with the U.S. Postal Service. Orrin is survived by his children, Michael O. Thompson of Germany; Mariana and Daniel Sherwood of Texas, Shirley Jones and her fiancé, George Kahn, Mary and James Drennen of the Town of Newburgh; grandchildren, Raven, Gabrielle, Elizabeth, Cynthia and her husband, George, Allison and her husband, Scott, Stephanie, Timothy; and great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Nicholas. Orrin was pre-deceased by his wife of 32 years, Mary Diaz Thompson. This wonderfully generous and fun-loving father and grandfather will be greatly missed! Visitation will be at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, New York, on Thursday, March 21, 2013, from 6-8 pm, with a service following at 8 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be held in Orange County Veteran's Cemetery in Goshen, NY at a later date.
