Patricia P. Rider
August 22, 1940 ~ January 07, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Patricia Page Rider, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who died peacefully in her home on January 7, 2025, at the age of 84, surrounded by her family.
Patty was born in the Bronx on August 22, 1940, and grew up in Pelham and Briarcliff, NY. She attended Cornell University, where she majored in Early Education and met her future husband, David Rider, while working at Olin Library. David visited the library repeatedly over the course of many days until, thankfully, Patty finally gave in and agreed to get ice cream with him. They went on to share the kind of beautiful, loving, and devoted marriage that most can only dream of.
Patty was a central, stable, and consistent presence in the lives of her four siblings – Michael, Peter, Pamela, and Melissa. She was also the adored and adoring mother of three sons: Joshua, Jeremy, and Justin. She was the heart of her family, embodying warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support – and was simultaneously the central figure in her circle of friends, known for her grounded, level-headed demeanor and her remarkable ability to bring optimism and calm to those around her. Patty loved walking with her friends, spending time with her dogs, and immersing herself in her favorite books (always reading the last page first to ensure a happy ending). And she loved and valued family above all else.
A model of excellent health into her 60's, Patty suffered a major stroke in 2007 that took away her speech and mobility. But it never compromised her dignity, grace, or her deeply loving nature. She continued to inspire those who knew her with patience, resilience, and an enormous capacity for caring.
In addition to her husband, children, and siblings, Patty is survived by her three daughters-in-law, Jill Rider, Laurie Goldman, and Nancy Rider, as well as her five grandchildren: Bo, Jesse, and Sadye; and Alyssa and Sam.
Her legacy is one of kindness, compassion, and strength. Patty's memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, as a woman who enjoyed the simple things in life: a bowl of Breyers ice cream, a hot bath, and quality time with family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held at Temple Beth Jacob in Newburgh, NY at 10:00am on Friday, January 10, with burial to follow. In lieu of shiva on Friday night, mourners will attend services at Temple Beth Jacob starting at 7:30pm with an oneg in Patty's honor to follow. On Saturday, shiva will be at Temple Beth Jacob from 5:30-7:30pm with services at 6:30pm. Shiva will continue in Bethesda, MD at Jill and Jeremy's home on Monday and Tuesday evening from 7:00-9:00pm with minyan at 7:30pm.
