August 4, 1935 ~ May 7, 2024
Paul J. Neugebauer, age 88, of New Windsor, NY passed away May 7th, 2024 at the home he shared with his wife Rachael.
Paul was born on August 4, 1935 in Newburgh, NY to Paul J. and Julia (Crosby) Neugebauer. He was a proud graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, class of 1953. Upon graduation, he entered the United States Navy serving on the USS Lookout, where he achieved the rank of Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class. After his honorable discharge, Paul worked for the City of Newburgh Parks Department for several years before starting his career as a carpenter for the City of Newburgh School District from which he retired in 1998 as Head Carpenter. He made many lifelong friends along the way both at the Parks Department and the Carpenter Shop on Odell Circle. He was also a proud member of Catholic War Veterans, Joseph R. Farina Post 386, and a proud member of Club 60 od Newburgh.
Paul married Rachael (Pacelli) on May 27, 1961 and over the next several years they added 3 sons to their family, Paul, Stephen and Michael. He was a loving husband and father and later a proud Grandpa/Pop Pop to Jessica, Michael, Nicole and Marlyse.
Paul was always ready to help his family and friends. He was strong as a bull and could always be counted on to build or fix something for anyone who needed his help. He was a true friend with a great sense of humor, always looking to make others laugh.
He was predeceased by both his father and mother, his brother Oren Dayton and his sisters Harriet Nichols, Julia Coleman, Eleanor Long and Gertrude Tripodi and brothers-in-law Frank Tripodi and Jack Gallagher.
He is survived by his wife Rachael, sons Paul (JoAnn), Stephen (Andree) and Michael (Marisol) along with his grandchildren and recent great-granddaughter Caroline (Michael & Jillian Neugebauer); sisters-in-law Delores Dayton and Rosemarie Gallagher; his nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Sonny, with a heartfelt thank you to Michele Abato for her help during this difficult time. A special thanks to health aides Bruni, Yma and Yadira along with his hospice nurses. We are forever grateful for the compassionate care Ellen Gallagher provided during his final weeks.
