Peter J. Merli of Wallkill, NY, a forty year resident of the area, entered into rest on Sunday, September 2, 2012 at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He was 63. The owner of Wallkill Wines and Liquors in Wallkill, NY, he was the son of Margaret Malone Merli and the late Frank Merli. He was born on April 15, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY. On January 19, 1976 he married Janice Doonan in New City, NY. Peter was proud to serve his country in the US Navy and was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Gardiner, NY. In addition to his wife, Janice, Peter is survived by his son, Peter Merli, of Newburgh, daughter, Kelly Lowery, of Noblesville, Indiana, daughter, Sarah Merli of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and son, Timothy Merli of Wallkill, NY; grandchildren, Mackenzie, Matthew, Jacob, Jackson, Olivia, Rylee, Cooper, Avery, Alexander, Sydney and Autumn; brothers, Joseph Merli, of Rutherford, NJ, John Merli, of Lyndhurst, NJ, James Merli of Allendale, NJ, Frank Merli of Riverdale, NJ and Robert Merli of Mint Hill, NC; sisters, Peggy Letsche of Rutherford, NJ and Mary Sujkowski of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews: Thomas, Michael, Bridget, Matthew, John, Frank, Andrew, Laura, Patrick, James, Julie, R.J., Jason, Ava Merli, Danielle Letsche, Lauren and Nicholas Sojkowski, Nichole Johnson, Danielle Angueira, Rory and Moira Betz, John, Jimmy, Dino, Joey, Renee, and Christiana Doonan, and Jamie Donaton; and cousin, Sammy Merli. In addition to his father, Frank Merli, Peter was predeceased by his grandson, Jacob; brother, Thomas Merli; niece, Dawn Letsche and nephew, Brian Letsche. Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on Thursday, September 6, at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Friday, September 7, at St. Charles of Borromeo Parish in Gardiner. Cremation will follow in Cedar Hill Crematory, Newburgh. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Peter's name to either Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, 2nd Floor, Bethesda, Maryland 20814; or Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 6062, Albert Lea, MN 56007-6662.
