Rocco A.
Pacella Jr.
July 17, 1943 – September 16, 2012
Rocco A. Pacella, Jr., of Newburgh, a lifetime area resident, entered into rest on Sunday, September 16, 2012 in St. Luke's Hospital, Newburgh, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 69. Son of the late Rocco A. Pacella Sr. and Mary (Alfano) Pacella, he was born July 17, 1943 in Newburgh. Rocco began working at the Empire in Newburgh, and when Grand Union was built in Newburgh, he transferred there and worked as Assistant Manager and Manager for the company for 43 years. After he retired he continued to work for the retail grocery business on a part time basis for 10 years. His many years of service provided him with an extended circle of good friends and memories that he always held dear to his heart. He often spoke of them with deep affection and respect. He gained a reputation as "one of the best" managers, and was respected by all who worked for him. Rocco lived "the dash" in a way that showed his exemplary character as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend for life. Survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Shirley (Wager) Pacella, whom he married on September 24, 1967 in Sacred Heart Church; his son, Eric Pacella and his wife Rebecca of Montgomery; daughter, Michelle Bowe and her husband Thomas of Newburgh; grandchildren, Seth, Alexis and Peyton Pacella, and Reese and Logan Bowe; his sister, Frieda Gozza of Newburgh; brothers, Michael Pacella of Newburgh, Carl (Linda) Pacella of Sarasota, FL, and Richard (Bonnie) Pacella of Mooresville, NC; and sister-in-law Nancy Pacella of Newburgh. He is further survived by his loving and devoted nieces and nephews, whom he always held a special place in his heart, Christine (James) Williams, Heather (Jerry) Pacella, Susan Brammell, Steven (Vanessa) Pacella, Michael (Lori) Pacella Jr., Dennis (Renee) Pacella, Anthony Pacella, Carl Pacella Jr., Joseph (Alexis) Pacella, Richard Pacella, Peter (Nancy) Magazino, Howard Upright, Lesley (Brian) Olejniczak, and Matthew Sanchi; as well as 15 great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Rocco was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Leonard Gozza and his nieces, JoAnn and Tara Gozza. The family would like to thank the dedicated doctors who took such care with him. Thoughts of their kindness will remain a part of his family's memories. Also a special thank you to Father Bill and Father Peter for the kindness they showed to Rocco. The family will receive their friends from 5-8 pm on Wednesday, September 19 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 20 at St. Mary's Church, Newburgh, with Father Bill Scafidi officiating. Entombment will follow in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Newburgh.
