Russell John Astrab
October 23, 1941 ~ May 4, 2025
Russell J. Astrab (Russ) passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025 at the age of 83. He resided in Salisbury Mills, NY with his loving wife of nearly 30 years, Lorraine DeMarco Astrab.
Russ was born on October 23rd, 1941 in Yonkers, NY to John and Anna Astrab. He grew up in a tight knit Eastern European neighborhood, and attended Saunders Technical High School, where he studied drafting and architecture.
After graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy, where he served on the USS Topeka. After completing his service with the Navy, he worked for Consolidated Edison, Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant for 35 years. During this time he also completed his education at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY.
He was a devoted husband to his wife, Lorraine, showing her what true love looks like through his kindness, patience, and daily acts of care. His love for Lorraine was evident in both the big and small moments—through gentle words, quiet gestures, and a constant presence.
Later in life, he discovered a passion for painting and quickly became an outstanding artist. What began as a curiosity soon turned into a meaningful outlet for expression and joy. His artwork reflected the same thoughtfulness and depth that he brought to every part of his life, and it became yet another way for him to connect with others and share his vibrant spirit. He had a light-hearted spirit, always ready with a joke or a smile, and never turned down a sweet treat. Russ had a talent which he shared through local exhibits featuring his oil paintings. According to Russ, "Painting is now a passion that has enriched my life with a new interest and enlarged my circle of friends."
Russ is survived by his wife, Lorraine, two children, Christine Astrab Tobias and her husband, Dave, and John Astrab, and his wife, Jen as well as two step sons, William Kessler and his wife, Lisa, and Michael Kessler, and his wife, Dolores. He also has 9 grandchildren. Russ and his family are surrounded by many friends and extended family.
Funeral arrangements are at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave Newburgh NY.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday, May 8th.
A funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 301 Ann Street Newburgh NY at 11 am on Friday, May 9th.
Following the service, Russell will be laid to rest at Holy Spirit Ukranian Catholic Cemetery, 141 Sarah Wells Trail, Campbell Hall, NY 10916.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks for all the well wishes and support. For those who would like to honor Russ, contributions to Smile Train are welcome in lieu of flowers. Details can be found at Support.smiletrain.org.
