Dr. Sharon Lynn Russell

November 15, 1967 ~ December 30, 2024

Sharon Russell, age 57, of Newburgh, NY, formerly of Ann Arbor, MI and Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away unexpectedly on December 30th 2024 from a severe stroke.

Sharon was born in Mechanicsburg, PA on November 15, 1967 to the late James C. Russell and The Reverend Shirley J. (Jacobs) Russell.

Sharon's survivors include her brothers, David Russell of Mechanicsburg, PA and Scott Russell of Harrisburg, PA; and her nephew Zachariah Russell of Mechanicsburg, PA. She is also survived by her two cats which she adored, Precious and Gus Gus.

Sharon graduated from Mechanicsburg High School. She received a Bachelors in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Millersville University of PA. She went on to receive a Masters in Education K-12 Reading Specialist, Teaching and Curriculum at Penn State University and two separate Doctorates at University of Maryland in Philosophy, Curriculum and Instruction and Philosophy, Expository Comprehension.

Sharon went on to teach at University of Michigan as an Adolescent Literacy consultant. She is the creator, author and founder of the Adolescent Critical Reading Intervention model which was implemented into public school districts across the state of Michigan. She then proceeded to Ashland University as a Literary Director and Assistant Professor. From there, she went on to the State University of New York at New Paltz as an Associate Professor in Literacy Education.

Sharon was a loving sister, friend and especially Aunt. She was heavily involved in the Girl Scouts where she served as a leader in the Hemlock Council. She was also involved with several cat rescues in Michigan. Sharon loved the beach and enjoyed traveling. She also made an incredible top secret sour cherry or pumpkin pie according to her nephew. She loved music, especially classical, and played cello, guitar and dulcimer. She even wrote a book available on Amazon, "The Landscape of Expository Comprehension".

Contributions in celebration of Sharon's life can be made to Speranza Animal Rescue, The Freeman Arts Pavilion in Ocean City, MD or Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA.
