Sister Mary Angela Smith, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died on May 23, 2025, at St. Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center in Caldwell, NJ. She was 95 years of age.

The daughter of the late Eldridge and Jeannette Beckert Smith, she was born October 8, 1929, in Washington DC.

Sister Mary Angela entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, New York on September 8, 1953, made her First Profession June 15, 1955, and Final Profession August 21, 1958.

Sister Mary Angela Smith taught elementary school and performed a number of congregational services. Sister was an educator in schools in New Jersey, Florida and North Carolina. Sister Mary Angela served the congregation in the finance office and as transportation coordinator at Mount Saint Mary Convent in Newburgh, New York.

Sister enjoyed staying in contact with her family and many friends. A visit with her often included an update about those who had visited her or she had spoken to on the phone. With good humor, Sister easily took charge of events happening around her, earning the title "Mayor" both at Meadowview at the Wartburg, Mount Vernon, NY and at St. Catherine of Siena Healthcare Center in Caldwell, NJ.

Sister Mary Angela is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Hope, and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents and her sisters Jean Woodhouse, Shirley Smith, Gladys Wolfe-Bernsen and Louise Smith.

A celebration of Sister Mary Angela's life will be held on Saturday May 31, 2025, in the Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY. The viewing will begin at 9:15 a.m. followed by a wake service at 10:00 a.m., and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Immediately following the liturgy, Sister will be buried in the Dominican Sisters of Hope Cemetery at Mount Saint Mary.
