Obituary

Sister Virginia Mohr, OP of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, died July 9, 2014, just one day after her 86th birthday, at the Wartburg in Mt. Vernon. The daughter of the late Harry Walter and Anne Murphy, she was born July 8, 1928 in Newark, OH. Sister Virginia entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor on March 7, 1954. Sister Virginia earned an RN in Nursing from Mt. Carmel Hospital, a BS in Public Health Nursing from the University of Dayton, and a PHN in Public Health Nursing from Columbia University. Sister Virginia's ministry in the field of nursing began with the Dominican Sisters of the Sick Poor first in Boston, MA from 1955-56; in Springfield, OH, 1956-62; in Minneapolis, MN, 1962-65; in Dayton, OH, 1965-67; in Columbus, OH, 1967-69; in Denver, CO, 1969-71. In 1971, Sister Virginia moved to Ossining, NY, where she ministered with the Dominican Sisters Family Health Service in the Bronx and Harlem from 1975 -1981. From 1981-83, she worked in the Philippines with Family to Family. Upon completing a sabbatical in 1984, she returned to Columbus, where she ministered with the Dominican Home Health Agency until 1993. From 1994-96, Sister Virginia was a community nurse for Dominican Community Services in Cincinnati. From 1997-2007, Sister Virginia was a nurse aide supervisor with Day Share in Cincinnati, Ohio. She retired at the Newburgh Center of Hope in July 2007 and moved to the Wartburg in 2009. Sister Virginia is survived by her Dominican Sisters of Hope and two nieces. She is predeceased by her parents, her brothers Carl and Robert, her sisters Martha Halabis and Margaret Pritchard. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on July 14, 2014 at the Ossining Center of Hope. Sister Virginia will be cremated. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brooks Funeral Home at 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, New York.
