Obituary

Stanley L. Grossman, M.D., F.A.C.S, M.P.H.

 August 21, 2026

Stanley L. Grossman, 97, died peacefully at home on August 21, 2026, surrounded by his wife and loving sons. Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 14, 1929 to Sidney and Ida Grossman, he was a graduate of Columbia College, Downstate Medical School, and did his internship and residency as Chief Surgical Resident at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn New York.

After residency, he was commissioned in the Navy as a Lt. Junior Grade and rose to the rank of Lt. Commander at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, FL.

In 1962, he moved to the Hudson Valley and set up his surgical practice which eventually became Mid Hudson Surgical Associates in Newburgh, NY. He was involved with and held leadership roles in many organizations: Presdient of Temple Beth Jacob, Newburgh; Chair of the NYS Board for Professional Medical Conduct; President of the Orange County Medical Society; President of the NYS Medical Society; NYS Delegate to American Medical Association; and a founder of the Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company (MLMIC), the second largest medical malpractice insurance company in the US. As part of his commitment to provide greater access to medical care, he helped establish Pru-Care in the Hudson Valley, an early HMO.

Knowing that he could not practice surgery as he aged, he went back to school and earned a Master of Public Health from NYS Medical College in Valhalla, NY. Later in his career he reviewed cases for MLMIC, subsequently being tapped for President and he also served on its governing board. He was instrumental in the sale of MLMIC to Berkshire Hathaway.

He married the love of his life, Adele, in 1952 and enjoyed 74 years of marriage. He is survived by Adele, his sons Steven (Heidi), and Richard (Adam), his beloved granddaughters Bari (Michallynn) and Jackie (Mariana), and his younger brother Paul (Vivian).

He was a long time member of the Powelton Club, Newburgh, and as an avid sailor at the Chelsea Yacht Club, Chelsea, NY.

A funeral service will be held at Temple Beth Jacob at 11:00am Monday, August 24th, located at 290 North Street, Newburgh, NY.

A burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery located at 5468 Route 9W, Newburgh, NY.
