A time to be born…Steve L. Owens Jr. was born on September 13th, 1934 in Jenkinjones, W. VA (McDowell County) to the late parents of Steve Owens Sr. and Lucy Owens. Steve L. Owens Jr. was the eldest of five children.
A time for education and service…Steve's education was obtained through Gary Public School Systems, in Welch W. VA. He later joined the United States Army, where he served his country honorably in the Korean War from June 15th, 1952 to June 25th, 1955. He was awarded the Purple Heart during his time of service. Steve was later employed by West Point in Highland Falls, NY, for over 35 years. After retiring from West Point, Steve was gainfully employed by IBM for 13 years. He continued employment in his later years as a security officer at Orange County Community College. Steve was a proud member of The Masonic Lodge, and was an awesome and unique artist, where he enjoyed painting for his family and friends.
A time for life and family…As a young man, Steve met Evelyn M. (Snell) Owens and later married the love of his life. Through this union, they were blessed with four beautiful children, where they resided in Newburgh, NY. The eldest child being Darryl Lorenzo Owens, followed by Janine W. Owens-Griffin, Olivia F. Owens-Spell (Curtis), and Quinn E. Owens.
A time for rest and remembrance… Steve peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday May 14th, 2024 at his home in New Windsor, NY. He is leaving behind treasured memories with his loving family. He's survived by his loving sister Ruth J. Banks (Ernest), daughters Janine W. Owens-Griffin, Olivia F. Owens-Spell (Curtis), and son Quinn E. Owens. Steve deeply enjoyed his time with his six grandchildren, Sean K. Griffin, Chyvonne A. Griffin, Darnell S. Dodson, Christopher C. Spell, Cyrus E. Owens, and Christina F. Spell. There are three great-grandchildren – Londyn S. Joseph, Adam S. Griffin, and Kairo D. Griffin. Steve had many loving nieces and nephews as well.
Steve was predeceased by his loving parents Steve Owens Sr. and Lucy Owens, his son Darryl L. Owens, his beautiful wife Evelyn M. (Snell) Owens, brothers Richard D. Owens and Howard Owens, and sister Willa Dean Butler.
I want to thank everyone for a rich lifetime of relationship and friendship…I am now with my parents, wife, son, and beloved siblings…and we are happy!
Memorial services will be held from 2 - 4 PM on Saturday, May 25 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh.
