Susan Bates of Southfields, NY, died Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at the Kaplan Family Hospice, Newburgh, NY. She was 61 years old. She was born May 21, 1954, inSummit NJ, daughter of Nancy M. Wood of Vineyard Haven, MA andthe late William E. Bates. Susan was employed as Office Manager, Hospitalist Program, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. Susan was a wonderful mother to her sons. Alwaysinvolved in their activities, she was especially active in the Little League and the Monroe-Woodbury Marlins swim team.The familyenjoyed ski trips to Vermont and many vacations on Martha's Vineyard together. Susanenjoyedhorseback riding, and lovedallanimals. Her two cats, Buddy and Chip, and dog, Riley, willmiss her good care. Another talent of Susan's was her strength and ability to do home improvements, anything from refinishingwood floors to installing tile.Her friends andfamilyloved beingin her company. She always had a good word for everyone, and her sense of humor, thoughtfulness and beautifuloutlook made it a pleasure to be around her. On May 31, 1986, in Long Beach, NY, SusanmarriedPat Walsh of Southfields. They havethree sons, Patrick, Kevin (deceased), and Steven. There was a previous marriage to Michael S. Goodman, DDS.Susan is survived by five siblings: Sandra Varno, Preston Hollow, NY; Jennifer Bates, San Juan, PR; Sally Bates, Burlington, VT; Jill Gardner, Gainesville, FL; Janet Bates, Brattleboro, VT. Also surviving are nieces Katherine Varno,Lisa Varno and Emily Gardner, andnephews, David Varno,Dan Varno and Aaron Gardner.
