Obituary

Susan L. Coonan
April 21, 1949 ~ August 30, 2023
Our sweet mom was born in Newburgh, NY on April 21, 1949. She was the daughter of Ralph Lake and Helen L. Graham. Mom was one of ten children, and grew up in Balmville, NY, where she loved the outdoors, riding her dirt bike and getting into mischief with her siblings. Surviving siblings are Bruce Lake (Ruthanne) SC, Terry John, Marion, Eddie (sister-in-law, Linda) & Lynne, Newburgh, NY.
Suzie was a beloved security guard at the Newburgh Free Academy for 30+ years. We have fond memories of her co-workers, Buster & Ms. Roberta, who jokingly called her "froggy" for her love of frogs at the time. After her retirement from the school district, Suzie was a part-time bus monitor for West Point Tours for special needs children. This was no surprise, as our mom loved caring for others and always gave of herself selflessly. She adored her bus family.
Mom loved camping, fishing, spending time with her sister playing their own made-up version of pool badminton. They laughed more than they ever hit the birdie and broke dozens of dollar store rackets.
Mom's other passion was her beloved NY Yankees. She had to watch every game, know every player and had an experience of a lifetime when her daughter took her to a game in a limo and had the best seats. She didn't care that she got poured on, because after all, they won!
Mom will be forever loved by her surviving children, daughters, Helen (Lois) Walsh (son-in-law Brian), Wendy S. Depew (son-in-law David); son Jody L. Cline (daughter-in-law Tammy); grandchildren Betsy (Adam), Sharon (Albi), Courtney (Eric), Danielle, Morgan, Nicole & Samantha, Raquel, Brucie, and Gabriella; also, her great-grandchildren, Jaydah, AJ, Mia, Sadie, Isabella, Madison & Vincent, Catalina, Mallory, Avery, Mason, Rachael, and Annabelle.
She was predeceased by her loving parents, sisters Mae and best friend & twin sister Sally; her brothers Wally (SC) & Eric (FL); and youngest son Bruce.
She is loved by several nieces, nephews, extended family (Dottie & Lexi), and dear friends.
Services will be held at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh, NY on Monday, September 4th from 11AM-2PM. Cremation to follow at family's discretion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence, 1 Sunrise Lane, Newburgh, NY 12550 (Link for on-line giving).
Our family is so thankful for the care from the St. Luke's ICU staff, mom's medical teams and all who cared for her in any way. We are overwhelmed with the outpouring of love, calls, text, and prayers that will get us through the days and weeks ahead. Our deepest love & appreciation to you all.
