February 15, 1942 ~ May 27, 2026
Susan M. Mitchell (née Wallace), of 12 Dennis Road, Newburgh, NY, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
Born and raised in Newburgh, Susan graduated from Newburgh Free Academy, where she met her high school sweetheart, Frederick T. Mitchell. The couple married on May 28, 1961, at St. Mary's Church and shared many devoted years together until his passing.
Susan is survived by her loving children, Thomas Mitchell, Laura Walsh and her husband Matthew, and Emily Miller and her husband David. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Ryan Walsh, Christopher Mitchell, Michael Walsh, and Kathryn Walsh, all of whom brought immense joy to her life. She is also survived by her devoted sister, Kathleen, and was predeceased by her sister, Joyce. Her sisters were her best friends throughout her life.
For nearly a decade, Susan worked as an administrative assistant at the Newburgh Developmental Learning Center. She truly loved her work, especially the dedicated staff and the disabled children she served with kindness and compassion.
Susan found happiness in life's simple pleasures and the company of family and friends. She was an avid reader, talented knitter, and wonderful baker whose home was always warm and welcoming. She loved playing the piano, singing, and making frequent trips to New York City to enjoy plays and concerts. Susan also looked forward to her weekly bridge games, trips to Atlantic City to gamble and see shows, relaxing on the beach, and spending quiet time doing puzzles.
Susan will be remembered for her gentle spirit, devotion to family, warmth, and generosity. Her strength and resilience were admired by all who knew her. She leaves behind cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
The family would like to thank Susan’s aide, Irina, from Tri-State Care Alternatives, and the Hospice of Orange and Sullivan County for their compassion, dedication and professionalism over the past five months.
