Virginia Mae Hill
May 14, 1943 ~ November 9, 2025
Virginia Mae Hill, 82, of Newburgh, NY, heard the Lord's call and peacefully transitioned from her earthly labors on November 9, 2025, at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY, surrounded by her loving and supportive family.
Virginia was born on May 14, 1943, in Clarkton, NC. She was the fourth of thirteen children born to the late James Wilson "Pete" Hill and the late Gertrude Leach-Hill.
During her early years, Virginia attended the Bladen County School System and worked in the fields cropping tobacco and picking cotton. At the age of 16, she was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. Though the disease created challenges, her resilience, strength, and determination to live life fully never wavered.
Virginia began serving the Lord at a young age. She was a member of her grandfather's church, Tabernacle & Cromartie Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, where she joyfully sang in the choir. Her lead song was "The Christian Automobile" by the Dixie Hummingbirds. As a young woman, she relocated to New York, where she continued her Christian journey. Over the years, she served as Church Mother under the leadership of Pastor George Jackson (Miracle and Deliverance Worship Center), Pastor Tamara Stewart (Ultimate Faith Ministries), and Pastor Lamont Gardner (Grant Memorial House of Joy).
Virginia loved simple joys like reading her Bible, praying over her family, watching her soap operas and game shows, and cheering on the New York Knicks (even when they stressed her out). She cherished conversations with her family, checking on their well-being, and keeping up with the latest family news. She made birthdays and holidays feel special; if nothing else, you could always expect a card with a little cash or a thoughtful gift.
Before her health declined, Virginia enjoyed babysitting, sewing, and cooking. Her baked beans, macaroni salad, and those unforgettable tea cakes remain family favorites. Her kitchen was a place of love, laughter, and "Baby, you want something to eat?" She did not know how to let anyone leave hungry.
Virginia was known for her warm hospitality. She had a gift for making friends feel like family. She did not meet strangers, just loved ones she had not been introduced to yet. The love of God shone through everything she touched. It is no wonder she was cherished by so many.
She leaves to cherish her memory three children: Lisa Hill of Newburgh, NY; Rolanda Hill-Dennis (Easton) of Elizabethtown, NC; and Herman Hill (Juanita) of Newburgh, NY; one bonus son, Charles Edwards of Newburgh, NY; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mary Hill of Elizabethtown, NC, and Nancy Hill-Grady of Newburgh, NY; two best friends, Herman McLeod of Elizabethtown, NC, and Daphne Rhodie of Washington Courthouse OH, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved son, Victor Leo Hill; great-granddaughter, Heaven Gray; four brothers, Charles Leon Leach, James Earl Hill, Benjamin "Bennie" Hill, and Eddie Junior Hill; and six sisters, Alberta Hill, Gloria McIntyre, Ethel Hill, Alice Hill, Betty Mae Ballard, and Adele O'Neal.
May the life she lived forever speak for her, and through us.
