Vivienne Petrona Cohen, affectionately known as Vi, the baby girl of eleven children from Isabel and Joseph Cohen, was born in Quickstep, St. Elizabeth on August 13, 1953, and died on September 6, 2024, at the age of 71 in Highland, NY.
Vivienne Cohen was raised in a small district called Quickstep in the parish of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica and received her formal education from Quickstep All-Age School. As a young adult in the early seventies, she moved to Jamaica's capital Kingston where she worked as a nanny. While in Kingston, she received her heavenly blessing and first-born daughter, Barbara Brown. In 1980, she migrated to Newburgh where she helped raise her brother George Cohen's young children. There she had her second daughter and pride and joy, Nevita Bailey. In 1996, she was elated and excited to welcome her first boy and only grandchild, Oniel Ashley Jr. who meant the world to her. She doted on him and took him with her on her travels to Jamaica and England. Vivienne Cohen loved her children and always encouraged them to meet their maximum potential and to strive for greatness.
A faithful believer in the power of God, she attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Newburgh with her sisters and local friends. Known for her strong work ethic and a high standard of excellence, she worked at a local nursing facility and St. Luke's Cornwall- Hospital, where she worked for almost three decades and retired as an Endoscopy Technician.
"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace."1 Peter, 4:10. Vivienne Cohen was known for her welcoming home, exceptional cooking, infectious laugh, love of plants, resourcefulness, and sharp wit. Her home in Lake Street was a haven for many and was full every Sunday. Throughout her life, both home and abroad, she gave generously to her friends and family and extended kindness however she could to those in need. She lived a life of service.
Vivienne Cohen is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Brown and Nevita Bailey, and her grandson Oniel Ashley Jr.: her brothers George Cohen, Leroy Cohen, and Canute Cohen, and innumerable number of nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers Kerni Cohen, Isaiah Cohen, and Dennis Cohen; and her sisters Edna Cohen, Winnie Foreshaw, Victoria Green, and Delzie Cohen.
A celebration of her life and homegoing service will be on September 14th at First Baptist Church located at 481 South Street in Newburgh, NY 12550. Her final resting place will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery located at 5468 Route 9W North, Newburgh, NY 12550. She will be forever missed.
