Walter A. Stewart, of Newburgh, NY, passed away on October 9, 2025, after a short illness at Westchester Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on September 7, 1941, in Manhattan, NY, to Genevieve and Walter Stewart, Walter was a beloved husband, father, and friend. Known for his intelligence, wit, and kindness, he was cherished by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Walter spent his early years in both New York City and California's San Francisco Bay Area, graduating from Burlingame High School in 1959. He went on to build a distinguished career in Corrections, where he served with dedication for 20 years, retiring honorably as a Captain.
In 1966, Walter married the love of his life, Margaret "Margie" (O'Connor) Stewart, and together they shared nearly 60 wonderful years of marriage. They raised one daughter, Cristina "Cris" Carpenter, who was the light of his life.
Walter is survived by his devoted wife Margie, his loving daughter Cris, his cousin Genevieve "Gigi", sister-in-law Alice "Mitzi", many cousins, in-laws, extended family, dear friends, and his grand-dog Cannoli.
Walter will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his warmth, humor, and the love he gave so freely.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 14, from 4:00–7:00 PM at Brooks Funeral Home in Newburgh, NY.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, October 15, at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walter's memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
