Obituary

William Dean Hein

December 5, 1945 ~ July 20, 2025

William Dean Hein of New Windsor, New York passed away at his family home on Sunday, July 20, 2025. He was 79. He was born on December 5, 1945 in Winfield, Kansas to the late William Edwardand Audrey Nadine Owen Hein and grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida. He served in the Air Force from 1963 to 1967.  He married Dale Linda Pugh in 1969.  They soon settled in New Windsor, where they raised their family.

Bill worked for New York State as an assistant mechanical construction engineer, which was a fancy title for inspector.  But in time, he was given the title of "Engineer-in-Charge" after his name on all of his projects just like the other professional engineers with whom he worked, even though he never got an engineering degree.

Bill was a humble man who was always quietly serving others in any way he could. He also served in many capacities as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – from cubmaster tobishop of the Newburgh Ward from 1997-2002.

He spent a lot of time over the course of 25 years gutting and rebuilding nearly every room in the old house he bought for his family and so created a beautiful home they all love.  Then in 2005,he suffered a massive stroke that permanently changed everything.  He could no longer work or do much of anything, including talk.  But his example of patience through that trial, and the many others that followed, were an inspiration to all who knew him.  And through it all, he never lost his great smile.

Bill was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend whowill be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dale, at home, four sons, William Hein,  and his wife, Jonel, of Fleming Island, FL, Jeffrey Hein and his wife, Jennifer, of Salt Lake City, UT, Matthew Hein and his wife, Camille, of Alpine, UT, Kevin Hein and his wife, Rikki, of Haddon Heights, NJ, and two daughters, Jennifer Alleman and her husband, Garth, of Bern ID, and Amy Schmiedel and her husband, Roland, of Yucaipa CA, and 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 485 Mt. Airy Road in New Windsor.

There will be a visitation hour preceding the funeral from 10 to 11 am also at the Church.
