William J Kras Sr, commonly known as Bill to family and friends, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025. He is survived by his sister Helen Franzese. His loving children: Catherine Julian, William Kras Jr (Heidi), Michael Kras (Kerry) and step-son Douglas Hilbrandt (Pauline). His many grandchildren: Anthony, Nicholas (Taylor), Kaitlyn (Tristen), Michael, Billy (Ani), Max (Annaeliese), Lindsey (Jacob), Ryan (Jessica), Peter (Reagan) and step-grandchildren Jessica and Olivia. He was very proud of his great grandchild Ronan. Also, his many nieces and nephews, longtime friend Mariya Kris and caregiver Brenda Mercer who quickly became one of his close friends. He is predeceased by his parents Walter and Rose Kras (Sherak).
Bill attended PS 104 in Far Rockaway and graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1958.
Bill's career was a lifetime of public service. Directly after high school, Bill enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1958 and continued his career with the United States Military in the Coast Guard Reserves. Following his military career, Bill was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service and then continued and proudly retired as a Sergeant from the New York City Transit Police Department.
Bill had a love of trains, cows, reading, fishing and history. He could often be found sitting down at the river with his friends sharing stories or walking on a nature trail. He enjoyed meaningful conversations and debates with others. He spent time at family dinners with his children and grandchildren.
He was a chipper man who will be remembered by all of his family and friends. He will be missed dearly by everyone who had the good fortune to know him.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday August 27th from 4:00pm-7:00pm at Brooks Funeral Home located at 481 Gidney Avenue, Newburgh, NY 12550. A Funeral Home Service will be held on Wednesday, August 27th, at 6:30pm at Brooks Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at Pinelawn Memorial Park Cemetery at 12:00pm on Thursday, August 28th, located at 2030 Wellwood Ave, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
