Louise Bennett, 2nd oldest in a family of 16 children, entered into rest on October 25, 2021. The daughter of the late Nicholas and Louise (Young) Del Priore, she was born in Brooklyn, NY. Peggy was a Legal Secretary and County Clerk for 38 years in the City and Town of Newburgh, NY.
Peggy was a graduate of St Peter's Parochial School, Girl's Commercial High School in Brooklyn, NY, and Delehanty Institute in New York City. She was a tireless community activist belonging to several organizations, including the Orange County Legal Secretaries Assn, NYS Assn of Legal Secretaries, National Assn of Legal Secretaries, Legal Staff Alliance of NY, Legal Secretaries International, Business & Professional Women of Newburgh, Town of Newburgh Senior Tappers, RSVP Advisory Council; Volunteer at Town of Newburgh Recreation Office, Office for the Aging in Goshen, Town of Newburgh Police Station, and AARP Income Tax Program; Charter Member of NYS Magistrates Court Assn; Coordinator for Hot Meals Program at Senior Horizons; and a member of CSEA, AARP and NYS Employees Retirement System.
Peggy also participated for many years in Orange County Senior Games, earning many medals for her efforts. She won the coveted "Spirit of the Senior Games Award" in 2002. Peggy also received proclamation from the Town of Newburgh declaring October 20, 2003 as Peggy Bennett Day. Having worked tirelessly as a volunteer for many years, she was honored by being named "Outstanding Contribution by an Orange County Citizen" for the year 2006. She was also named Woman of Achievement on May 6, 2009, receiving the prestigious Bobby A. Lahey Award for her volunteer services.
Peggy is survived by her sons, Bruce Bennett and his wife Michelle of Woodbourne, NY and Robert Bennett of Newburgh, NY; her granddaughter, Emily Lulves and husband James of North Myrtle Beach, SC; 46 nieces & nephews; 59 grand-nieces & nephews; and 16 great grandnieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Ian Corey Bennett, and 10 brothers and 5 sisters.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, October 29 at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney Ave., Newburgh. A Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, with burial following in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Newburgh PBA.
